How does local pickup work?

I'm interested in offering local pick up for some of my items.  I tried it once and ended up having to ship for free to someone out of state when I did not intend to offer free shipping.  How can I offer pick up and not get stiffed on shipping by nonlocal buyers?

Kinda lost on how local pick up becomes you paying for shipping....

List your local shipping option in the post. Explain where you are shipping from and that local pick up means they must pick it up between X and Y times of day, and within Z number of days from the sale. And make it clear what happens if they don't pick up the item within the designated times (such as an automatic refund and your right to relist the item) .

And you also need to be sure you have some method to verify that they the actual buyer received the item. Photo ID required, sort of thing. Huge problem for the seller is someone else claims the item.

Alternatively, it may be more practical to offer economy shipping to people within town, as it really takes a very short amount of time for someone to ship USPS within the same city. Would depend on weight, I suppose, but recently ordered from within like 10 miles and the shipping speed was only a day in transit with economy shipping.

Why are you trying to scam the seller by buying an item that YOU CAN NOT LOCALLY PICK UP?????

I understood my seller's listing and that it said "local pick up only" so planned to have a freight company pick it up.  This was all well and good with the seller.  Seller went along with the arrangements for pick up by the shipper.  I paid for the item right away and was given the code for pickup by Ebay. I was invoiced by the shipper and paid the shipping right away.  The shipper picked up and the seller relayed that the furniture was picked up via Ebay messages.  However, he did not enter the code for another 10 days so the reading was wrong on Ebay.  It was understood by all that there would be a time gap for delivery due to the shipper picking up other items to transport prior to his long drive coast to coast or along his way.  It was delivered  20 days from pick up.  Whan the furniture arrived, it had many issues that were not described by the seller and not shown in photos.  I understand that  a seller is fully responsible for their listing and a buyer should have buyer protection for this and that even though a seller may state they don't accept returns, they must in a situation of "arrived not as described"   I found eBay agents to say different things when asking for a return and refund for the item and even eBay's written policy to be in disagreement with what they ended up saying.  Would you have thought anything was misunderstood by me by my actions about having a freight company pick up in this case?

I'm a new seller. If I select local pickup do I set up the pickup location for the buyer and the time? Or do they?Thank you for your help.

You communicate with the buyer after he pays, and reach a mutual agreement,however its usually at the buyers convenience.
