Help me understand the EBay shipping charges.

I listed a jacket, with weight of 2lb - shipping UPS Ground Advantage

Buyer purchased the jacket and was charged $15.70  postage

Time to print the label, postage to ship 2lbs UPS Ground Advantage was $6.33

Buyer postage overcharge was $9.37

What is going on with shipping charges????

With examples like this (high postage overcharge) it is no wonder buyers are not engaging and sales are not happening.

Has anyone used the new postage option, appreciate your feedback and comments.

I think you're confusing USPS Ground Advantage with UPS Ground two entirely different services.

Looks like your buyer did engage and a sale happened. Users buy on the total price, which must have suited your buyer, whatever that price was. In this case, you have a non-issue. Way to go!

UPS or USPS ?

What could be happening:

Your buyer is paying the "retail cost" (per your actions). You are paying "online label" costs.

Ok, forgetting the UPS thing and sticking with USPS...

sounds like you do NOT have the package size/weight accurately entered so the buyer is being charged for a 'larger' package (either weight or size or both)...

I found the jacket, I'm in Nevada, you in Arizona and Shipping shows $10.10 using Ground Advantage.

So, you either have shipping set as 'retail' or added a 'handling fee' or both or...

BUT!!!!

You need to realize a $10 shipping label (your ACTUAL cost) actually costs YOU about $13-$14  ($1.30 ebay fee and $2 or so for the 'packing materials, envelope, box, label etc.

As mentioned above Ground Advantage is USPS. UPS is called Ground Saver. Helps avoid confusion to get the nomenclature right.

If you had walked into the post office or a UPS store and bought the label over the counter you would have paid $15.70. All shipping companies give a discount if you buy the labels on line, package and label the shipment yourself. That saves them the time and effort to do it and makes the lines move quicker. This is especially important during heavy shipping times. Imagine how much longer the Christmas line, which already stretches out the door, would be if I and others like me showed up with multiple packages that the clerk had to weigh and label individually.

The discount that you get by buying the labels on line is, in essence, the shipping companies "hiring" you to do their job for them.

Using the size and weight of your package, figuring Nevada to California, USPS GA (net $6.14) gives me a 39% discount off the retail of $10.10, while UPS GS (net $6.72) gives me a 62% discount off the retail of $17.73. My time and effort has a value. I take the discount with no shame.

When USPS introduced their latest new set of rates on January 21, eBay started offering Cubic rates for both Priority Mail and Ground Advantage.  Postage rates for Cubic packages are based on the package volume, not on the weight. This can save a lot of money when shipping small heavy things.

However, there are no retail Cubic rates, and the shipping calculator in eBay listings defaults to show retail pricing.  So when a package is eligible for Cubic rates, with that nice savings even beyond the regular online discount, the buyer is still charged the regular Retail rate.

For instance, a package with dimensions of 8x8x2 inches will ship at the Cubic rate for .1 cubic foot. If the package weighs 2 pounds and you are shipping to Zone 8 via Ground Advantage, this means you will pay the eBay Cubic price of $6.33 but the buyer will pay the retail price of $15.70.  You can see these prices in the eBay shipping calculator:

You could give the buyer a little partial refund if you feel bad about the magnitude of the difference between the buyer's payment and the actal label cost.
