Free shipping with quantites higher than 1

I've read a bunch of prior discussions but can't find anything the specifically addresses this issue.  I want to change my items from Calculated Shipping to having Free Shipping for anything that can go USPS First Class.  To do this, I have built into the cost of the items, a few dollars to cover the average S&H charges.  But I have buyers that will want quanties of these items - with free shipping though, that multiplies the built-in S&H cost too.

As an example, an item has a value of $3 and a weight of 1 ounce to which I add another $3 (to cover S&H) and list it for $6 with free shipping.  A customer then wants to buy three of these items but they will end up paying 3 * $6 = $18 for 3 oz of product when I would like them to pay 3 * $3 plus $3 (to cover the S&H)  = $12 so that it remains competitive.  They'll go somewhere else rather than buy multiples at that price.

I have a store so I can use the Promotion Manager if that is the answer.  This seems like such a common issue yet I can't find the silver bullet solution.  Surely this has been solved.

You should find a program in your store offering, for example:

buy 2 get a X% discount

buy 3 get a larger X% discount

buy 4 get a still larger X% discount.

You will have to play with the figures but that address your issue

Re: Free shipping with quantites higher than 1

Thanks for the response but unfortunately this does not work for me.  This method applies a percentage of the cost rather than a dollar amount.  My items vary in cost but have a fixed weight.  I essentially want to remove the shipping cost from each additional item.

In my above example, if they buy two items, I want to provide a $3 reduction, if they buy three items, I want to provide a $6 reduction, if they buy eight, I want to provide a $21 reduction, etc.

Additionally, the method you describe only allows for thee tiers, I would want up to ten tiers.

I could do this when I used Calculated Shipping - set the weight to 1 oz and if the buyer bought eight of them, they got charged for an 8 oz shipment.  It only became problematic if they bought over 16 of the same item because the shipping calculator would push it out of First Class, when, in fact, the weight often was well under 16 oz.  This is because many of my items are actually less than 1 oz but that is the minimum you can set in the Shipping section of the listing.

Re: Free shipping with quantites higher than 1

There is another alternative.

When you set up the listing select "flat rate to all buyers" in which case the weight doesn't matter. You then have the option of inserting how much to charges for the first, and then a different amount for any subsequent. So for example, $3 for the first and $0 for any additional.

Unfortunately this does not work if the listing is "free shipping".

Other than that I am out of ideas. Anyone else want to jump in here?

Thanks for that but I really want to have the listings as 'Free Shipping' because I want them to show up when potential customers select the Free Shipping filter when doing searches.

Re: Free shipping with quantites higher than 1

Leave the free shipping.

Let’s say...

10 sell with free shipping to one buyer.

Cheaper for you as you send all 10 in one package.

No need to add + $0.00 for each additional item.

Marketing >Promotions
Quantity

Extra $X off X items

you can have more then one promotion on same listings, but one will only show at the top of the listing.

at cart/checkout it will apply the the promotion that matches number of items.

you can test it by adding items to cart.
