What do you mean by "mandatory"?

Again, you are only obligated to return the item to the same country it shipped from. Anything other than that is considered item misrepresentation.
CALL EBAY if the seller is still trying to mess with you. Tell them you bought it from the US and you expect to return it to the US. Tell them you need a US RETURN ADDRESS, period.

That's not true if the seller is paying for the return shipping. I've seen ebay reps say that on the boards more than once.

OP you seem to be kind of hung up on what is a relatively minor issue. First of all, the situation you encountered probably isn't very common. Most sellers would never want to pay to have a return shipped outside the country.
Secondly, you as a buyer, are inconvenienced at most in a slight delay in refund as you have absolutely nothing to lose since the seller provided the return label. You are guaranteed a refund. So what is the big deal?

The seller is responsible for the return shipping costs when the item was not described accurately, and this includes the item location. If the item was listed in the US, a US return address would be required. If the return address is in another country, the seller would have to pay for the return shipping. If they do not do this, a full refund is issued to the buyer without a return being required.

Does not sound like you read my original reply to you.We can agree to disagree on the level of problems this issue can cause for somebody.
I did read your original reply to me.
What "level of problems" can this issue cause for somebody? For NAD returns like yours, you were provided a label by the seller and are guaranteed a refund regardless where the package ends up. What part of that do you disagree with?

Agreed, because according to the Ebay rep I talked to by phone:

I also called Ebay and was told by them that I had to ship overseas even though it was shipped from inside the U.S.

This has happened to me and there are several problems with it.
EBay requires tracking showing the package being delivered back to the seller in order to get a refund. Some countries don’t track. It can be a very big PIA. It was for me.
