ESE 5” x 7” Paperboard Mailjacket Envelope (No padding) Denied at USPS

After a full year of using the 5” x 7” Paperboard Mailjacket Envelope (No padding) sold by ebay shipping supplies using ESE postage, our post office is now refusing them due to them claiming they are not machinable. Trading cards being mailed in a regular envelope is not safe enough. Now we are basically forced to use a traditional envelope or raise the price of shipping. Does anyone have any insight on what we should do, maybe speak with the post master in our area?

I have the 5x7 your referencing and they're non-machinable...most likely your customers have been getting postage due.

There's a nice selection of envelopes available through Amazon that meet the EsE requirements and offer good protection.  I use all the envelopes referenced below through EsE.

1000 EcoSwift 6.5 x 4.5 Rigid Photo Mailers Stay Flats White Cardboard Self Seal Envelopes https://a.co/d/4MJHRPA

EcoSwift 6 Inch by 8 Inch Self Seal Keep Flat Durable Lightweight Rigid Cardboard Photo Mailer Envelopes Bundle for Mailing, White (1,000 Pack) https://a.co/d/dAgRcsE

Re: ESE 5” x 7” Paperboard Mailjacket Envelope (No padding) Denied at USPS

Are you putting your cards in a top loader ? I am not familiar with the 5 x 7 mailjacket envelope. If you use a standard rectangular envelope and place the top loader inside then fold it over it works great. I've never had a problem.

Under terms in the listing you reference:

We warranty and represent
that the goods are as described in the listing. We specifically
disclaim any implied warranties of title, merchantability, fitness for a
particular purpose, and non-infringement. Customers should satisfy
themselves that any item choice made is suitable for their intended
purpose or use.

We pride ourselves on our customer service. In the rare event that you have a problem with your item please contact us and we will be happy to help.

Sounds like they do not claim it's fit for use. Only that by buying them, they meet the needs you are seeking to fulfill. Language for: Do Not buy Me - we don't know or care if it's valid.

We are using a top loader on all cards. When you say fold it over, can you share an example of what you mean by that? Thanks!

We would print out the order receipt then fold that in half then again into a square, slide the card into the folded order and then placed inside the 5x7. The dimensions work for what the post office shows online to be machinable.

Ebay shows that envelope in the guidelines for ese.  I would ask your PO why it isn't machinable.

It could that it was rejected because it isn't flexible enough or it is uneven but you have to ask.

A standard rectangular envelope is 4 1/2" x 9 1/2". Place the 4" top loader inside the envelope. When you fold the envelope you will have a size of approximately 4 1/2 and 4 3/4". I have to assume your 5 x 7 size is the only reason why I can think it got rejected. Maybe the 7" long is the reason ?

Re: ESE 5” x 7” Paperboard Mailjacket Envelope (No padding) Denied at USPS

I use the item listed below in a pinch:  I put the item between a cut out about the same material as the USPS Flat Rate mailers.  This process adds one step but it works and its machinable...and good value.

Xxcxpark 200 Qty Printable A7 Invitation Envelopes 5.25X7.25 inches Cards, Self Seal 120GSM white Paper Envelopes for Invitations, Papers, Photos, Documents, Wedding, Baby Shower, Easy to Seal https://a.co/d/hPF5O1H

Re: ESE 5” x 7” Paperboard Mailjacket Envelope (No padding) Denied at USPS

The 5x7 you're referencing are non-machinable because they're just too stiff.  Btw, top loaders get kicked off the automated rollers every time; resulting in a non-scan with possible postage due.

I took out the trusty NEIKO Caliper haha

The total weight with stickers, label and tape is : 1.7 oz weighed in line using the USPS scale on 3 different 5x7 ready to be shipped. Bowman chrome, soccer and a retro baseball card.

Total thickness: 0.1725

W: 4.9885
L: 6.960photo_2023-07-11_16-19-08 (2).jpg

Re: ESE 5” x 7” Paperboard Mailjacket Envelope (No padding) Denied at USPS

Since you're mailing sports cards through EsE, and you want your process streamlined:

1. get an order

2. grab the card

3. stick in a penny sleeve

4. put it in a 6.5 x 4.5 peel and stick mailer

5. print the label

I personally use Ecoswift 6.5 x 4.5.  If you buy them in lots of 1000, you're only paying 13 cents per mailer.  They offer excellent protection and they're machinable.

Good luck with the route you choose.

The size is fine, its the stiffness that's the issue.

USPS DMM:

Non-machinable:

Is too rigid (does not bend easily when subjected to a transport belt tension of 40 pounds around an 11-inch diameter turn).

Does a toploader bend easily when subjected to a transport belt tension of 40 pounds around an 11-inch diameter turn?
