Dinged for No Scan USPS

I had a bunch of orders for USPS. Paid and printed labels from eBay.

We do not have USPS pick up available where I live so I go to the post office.

I scan in all my packages with the machine just to pick up the scan.

Two weeks ago one of the scans would not go through the machine. It said something to the effect of label cannot be used. So I went into the post office counters and the clerk had the same problem. He then said, no problem I will have to manually enter it. I got a receipt for the manual entry scan. But I noticed on eBay the scan never picked up - still said label printed even though if you clicked the tracking said it was at the local post office. For days it said this on ebay label printed waiting for post office.......

The package got an actual scan a few days later. And eventually made it to the customer where they left positive feedback. The order got to the customer on time and the order was shipped on time.

But the ebay system still said label printed waiting for scan even though the order status also said shipped at the same time.

Now I have a ding on my account for a non scanned package. I only have one. Is  this a big deal? Do I fight this somehow? I read all the time how this could affect me later on if it were to keep happening. Why do labels sometimes not work?

You do not need to be concerned about a single missed scan, as you're judged based on a percentage of your sales and there's some built in buffer (up to 3% of your packages can be shipped late, and up to 5% have no scan at all, and you can still be Top Rated).  Most likely there was just an error in the scanner or it was an employee mistake.

Very rare occasion this happens to me. (Like extremely rare).

What i do is void the label and do a new one. Its a hassle, but it's so rare I've never really cared to complain.

Out of all the many packages you've sent how many times has this issue happened to you ?

Its happened once where the scan picked up eventually and  I was dinged. This example.

But I have had 2 problem labels In the past couple months that wouldn't scan at machine and were taken inside for clerk to enter.  I never really thought about it b/c I never got dinged and shipments were on time.

I guess it just irks me that a scan picks up eventually (for some reason not immediately at the counter even though physical receipt shows) but you still get dinged for an on time delivery.

I've had a couple of dings like that in the past year as well. I was puzzled about them at first, but they had no impact on me. I am Top Rated and keep plugging along makes sales and sending out packages. Don't sweat it! It is good you are paying attention to your metrics though, so keep that up.

It's not that big of a deal if it's 1 ding. If your percentage is high I wouldn't waste time. You could call into customer service and appeal it. I was able to get mine removed when a bunch of dings were adding up due to scanning issues.
