Claiming I'm returning a different item...

This is a new one for me:

I bought a Logitech webcam, it arrived damaged so I returned it and opted for the seller to send a replacement vs a full refund because I wanted that model of webcam.

Upon his receiving the return he now claims the unit was a different serial number than on the box. I don't know the serial, but his photos did not show the damage I returned. Now he is opening a case against me, I guess because he thinks I'm trying to scam him. This makes no sense to me and is very fishy. How do these cases usually turn out?

Right now the seller has the webcam I bought and 99% of the money I paid for it.

Re: Claiming I'm returning a different item...

If he offers free30 day returns he can refund you 50% what you paid.  You then ask eBay to step in and eBay will foot the rest of your refund usually

This quest stands on the edge of a blade...stray but a little and you shall fail to the ruin of us all.

Sellers are naive if they convert a return/exchange into a case. Sellers always lose.

Within a couple of days, eBay will rule in your favor and force the refund.

(There is the possibility that a Top Rated Seller or a seller offering free returns can give you a partial refund, as suggested by @frodobagginskennedy , but they forfeit this power when they open up a case).
