Did you mean:

Buyer wants to send back item, he didn't purchase...

Hi all...

Received this is my ebay inbox this morning:

New message from: ****** (4)

"My company bought your cashmaster omega 230, and it is not working. The power button is flashing red and green which indicates a faulty battery. I called customer support and they said they can't help us. We're going to return it to you for a refund."

But this person did not purchase cashmaster I had up for auction. Instead, he did ask a question earlier but was sold to another bidder.

However, he and the WINNING BIDDER live about 40 miles apart from each other in Indiana so it could very well be them. If eBay allowed me to search for bidder history (I think this used to be an option) this would make things a bit easier for me.

I sent him the link:

https://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/questions.html

Should I send the "actual winner" a question too? Or is that opening up a can of worms?

Is there anymore else I should be doing?  It has been awhile seen I've sold on eBay.

Thanks all!

I wouldnt do anything until the 'buyer' opens a case.

I'm not so sure I'd continue to communicate with this person. If s/he didn't win the bid, you're under no obligation to provide any information on return procedures/policies, eBay's MBG or anything else.

Ignore that person and don't contact the winning bidder.

When did you actually sell the item?

You are definitely opening up a can of worms if you do that. The guy who sent you the message has not bought anything from you; that much is clear. I would not say that you owe him any response, and I would definitely not contact the actual buyer either. He may have bought the defective item from someone else, and mistakenly dug up his previous message to you while trying to contact that seller.

If it really is your buyer, it's possible that he is communicating via his selling account but bought your item with his buying account, and a glance at the feedback activity of both accounts might give you a clue there. But that would just be for your own enlightenment; I would still not respond to that unsolicited message, and if your actual buyer has a problem with the device you sold, he can (and presumably will) contact you via that account.

Re: Buyer wants to send back item, he didn't purchase...

Hi thanks...

I sold the item the 19th.

Unfortunately, I already sent the original messenger (the one who didn't win the auction but lives 40 miles away) the following message:

That's fine...

Are you sure it was the only I sold you? What about the printer? Have you tried using this? The cords might be switched (the printer cord and the omega cord) I know you had asked a question earlier, but a different user id had won this auction.

I'm a bit confused.

Anyway, here's the link on how this works:

https://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/questions.html

And yes of course that's fine.

Thanks

Re: Buyer wants to send back item, he didn't purchase...

I would not email the buyer who won the auction.

I would email buyer who did not win, and let him know he did not in fact win the auction, therefore he cannot file a claim for an item he did not win.  Let the buyer figure out who he needs to contact.  If it is the same buyer with different IDs, he still needs to email you or file a claim under the ID he bid with.

Just sounds fishy to me.

No, I did look real quick. But they're both "buying accounts". I felt uncomfortable about this from day one, but I just chalked it up to that feeling of selling something relatively expensive on eBay.

It is fishy. I have a feeling (just a feeling though) that it is in fact the same person and I was going to get duped all along. I'm really paranoid about selling on eBay...I sold a camera here years ago and it was a real doozy. So as stupid as this seems, when I get this uneasy feeling I sometimes go on Google and get prepared (information, facebook, etc...)

Re: Buyer wants to send back item, he didn't purchase...

I would not have anymore contact with this person as he may be trying to scam you. I am sure that if he did contact customer support as he says, they would have told him that he was not the buyer and that is why they can't do anything for him.

If the item is not working then the original purchaser would be contacting you and not this person.

I would recommend not having anymore contact with person as he did not buy it.

I would not contact the original buyer as this may open up a can of worms. If it is defective that buyer would have contacted you. Just sit back and see if that buyer does contact you and then you can do what is right.

I have had a few of these in the past and they were scammers.

If need be you can call eBay customer support and ask them what you actually should do.

Re: Buyer wants to send back item, he didn't purchase...

Update:

Here's his response:

"The person that won this item works at the company that I do. And yes, the cords are plugged in right."

So just ignore it. Should I resend him the link? Or ignore him completely.

I'll put him on a blocked bidder...as well.

Ignore completely, and wait to see if the actual winning bidder contacts you or files a claim.

I'd ignore it. Correspond only with the actual buyer and only if absolutely necessary.

Okay...I will.

What if I get hit with an open case and negative feedback as a result of ignoring him?
