Buyer never sent returned item back

Hello, just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. A buyer was saying the item came back broken so I asked for pictures for extra verification and then they never responded back so i just accepted the return but they never sent it back to me. Now my funds were held and never processed and item was never sent back . It has been about a month or longer. Tried to reach out to ebay support for help but was unsuccessful.  Not sure if there is anything that can really be done ?Any feedback would be appreciated.  Thanks!

You understand no buyer has to provide pictures of a snad complaint, right? And because you didnt provide the buyer with a return label, Ebay stepped in and refunded her, and allowed her to keep the item. You probably also got a defect too.

This is the buyer that left you the negative feedback? She should have been refunded, and told to hold the packaging just in case the p.o. wants to see if it was wrapped properly..then you file the insurance claim. did you double box that item? If not, you may lose the insurance claim.

Hello- As you are a new seller I am writing this advice for you. Take it or leave it but I'm simply trying to make your selling experience be better for all involved. You need to read the TOS so you can understand what all of the policies are for this platform. This platform offers a MBG to all buyers. Your own no returns policy is superseded by eBay’s return policy in the TOS. Once the buyer selects INAD you will have to pay for the return shipping or eBay will deduct it from your account, regardless of what you stated in your own listing.

You are responsible for the item being delivered unbroken. You cannot claim it was broken by the dispatcher and think that's the end of it. That has nothing to do with your buyer. They purchased, and expected, an unbroken item. You can follow up with the carrier afterwards if you had insurance but your buyer doesn't have to wait for that to receive a refund. That's not how it works. The sooner you understand all this, the sooner you can move past this and avoid it happening again. Selling online can be both fun and a way to make additional money. You can do this, but you need to understand correctly how it works. Best of luck to you....

Sorry to hear of another seller(who is likely also a buyer) being VICTIMIZED by the policies here - Please excuse the replies of users who simply want to flaunt knowledge or make condescending remarks without even reading your post - Boards like this are full em'....

Anyway looks like you may have done things as you should, by accepting the return before Customer Service stepped in? It is unclear as to whether the buyer was refunded in this case, so its hard to offer  advice... Are your funds on Hold? Are you are still waiting for the return? Have you inquired with the buyer by replying to the case?

And by the way, there is NOTHING WRONG with asking for pictures of Damage AT ALL - Most buyers have no problem offering help in cases where the item TRULY is damaged - If they don't, there is a high likelihood you are dealing with an opportunist.

Did you provide a return shipping label?

If not and Ebay had to get involved, they probably refunded the buyer from your account and let them keep the item.

Have a great day.

I am sorry to hear you had a problem with this buyer.  It happens eventually.  Personally, I would like to see it happen less than one time in 100 sales, but that is not the case anymore.

As others have said, anytime someone opens a not as described, defective, broken type case, you are stuck paying for return shipping regardless and taking returns no matter what.  If you select to not accept returns, then you deny buyer remorse returns, which simply means you are guaranteed an Item Not Described or similar because the buyer does not want it anymore.  The buyer's know which option to select to avoid paying for return shipping.  Once in a great while you will get a good, honest buyer who would select a buyer's remorse return and pay for return shipping, but it is a rare bread of buyer.  I simply changed all of my listings to Seller Pays for return simply because I am going to pay anyway.

May as well hope it places me higher in the search algorithm and makes buyers honest when they no longer have to pay for buyer's remorse.

***

If someone reaches out to me and says broken via a message, they will often send a picture.  If I see a picture and it is obvious I made a mistake, I just refund immediately and apologize.  Otherwise, if a buyer reaches out, the proper answer is "Please open a case and return for a full refund."

That said, I like to feel the buyer out based on prior feedback left and what they are saying.  I like to wrap that answer in Listen, Apologize, Satisfy, Thank.

You might say, "

Thank you for bringing this to my attention and allowing me the opportunity resolve this issue.

I am very sorry XYZ arrive damaged; I clearly should have ABC.

Please provide a clear picture, which I am asking for because I need it for insurance.   After I receive the picture, I will put it down in eBay as buyer requests to undo/cancel the entire transaction and immediately receive a full, complete refund right-now/today with no need to return the item.

If, however, you are unable to provide a picture, you are welcome to open an case and return the item for a full refund.

Thank you"

The reasoning for this is buyers like to be be agreed with and listened to.  You basically parrot back what they tell you regardless of whether it makes any sense to demonstrate you are paying attention, and you say you are sorry regardless of how you really feel - make it at least seem sincere no matter what, and if the buyer is right, try and put yourself in the buyer's shoes of getting a broken item being still out the good item and the money while now needing to re-order and pay again while getting the refund on the back-end.  Some may not have financial reserves to buy the item until the refund arrives first.  ALWAYS show you are listening and ALWAYS apologize.

I tend to use a reply like this because it does not come across as not trusting the buyer, but makes them prove they are not scramming you for a refund.  If they take option #1,  it saves you the return shipping, and they get their refund faster.

Option #2 is MANDATORY language to write the buyer in my opinion taken from the Money Back Guarantee.  Basically, you really must say, "return for a full refund."  <<==  These words are almost magic, and they must ALWAYS be offered.

Always close with a Thank You.

Next, always be responsive.  Nobody wants to message you then wait four days.

If a case opens, respond immediately and accept it providing return postage.  If eBay grants the return, you loose the item and your money AND get a defect AND do NOT get your fees back.

The one exception is you can provide a tracking number for a not received.  If it is still in transit, you might do a package intercept in an attempt to get your item back, but do NOT tell the buyer this.  Many who file a not received claim are trying to get the refund and the item too.

Buyer never sent returned item back

The buyer has until a certain date to ship the item back. If for example it says feb 5th. They have until that evening for the tracking details to be updated and show the item was shipped. If they do not ship by then, it may take an extra day or two for the automated system to close it. You can also contact the CS dept to close the return for you after that date has passed. I would go to the chat feature and say the buyer did not ship back the return, can you please close the return. If the date has passed they will close it for you. Good Luck.

You can't call and have a return closed any more. You just have to wait until they decide to close the case.

Have a great day.

If the buyer never returns the item, Ebay will eventually close the case and release the funds.

Have a great day.
