Buyer gets refund after 4 months

So I sold an item for $450 back on 23rd of Oct last year. In February 10th the buyer requested a refund a got all his money back but didn't even send the item back. I didn't notice any of this until now when I logged into my paypal and I had a negative balance. I find this outrageous! The buyer has had it for way too long for him to get a refund. In addition, he didn't even reach out to me or anything nor did he send the item back. I have contacted eBay but have yet to hear on the matter.

What are your thoughts on this?

They have 180 days to file a case with PayPal.  Sounds like they filed a case and you didn't respond so PayPal allowed them to keep the item and got a refund.

Since this was a paypal case, ebay will have nothing to do with it. I'm guessing that it was a Chargeback with their credit card company.
