Others have posted on this, but I can't help repeating this warning: Never use Fedex Smartpost for shipping unless your item is unbreakable or of no value.
The problem is that both Fedex and the USPS are involved, so, in effect, neither takes responsibility for damage. Fedex says it covers damage while the package is in their possession, but how does anyone prove that, or even know how or when it was damaged?
Well, I learned my lesson. Never using it again for anything that could be damaged.
