Best method of partial refund?

I've been messaging a buyer about a product they aren't satisfied with. They've agreed on a partial refund of just 1 item on their 2 quantity order. I've heard some sellers getting defects for doing partial refunds without proof of consent, which isn't my case since I've been in contact with the buyer.

Which would be easiest and safest method for me to do a partial refund? Partial refund through paypal? Or through eBay with a return/refund request? Is there even a partial refund option for the eBay return/refund request? Thanks!

There was a time when you could get a defect for a full refund through PayPal, or perhaps a ding on your service metrics ... I'm not sure if that still happens.   I recently did a full refund through PayPal and I don't see a defect on my dashboard.

You do the partial refund through PayPal.  Your listings are not eligible to give a partial refund through eBay (you must be a TRS offering 30-day or longer buyer paid returns, or offer 30-day free returns).

Refunds are easy to do in Managed Payments, now, but it took me a while to find it.  Go to "Paid and Shipped" in your Seller Hub > Orders.  Find the customer you want to give a partial refund to.  Click on the dropdown arrow next the the "Leave Feedback" option (for single orders) or Print Shipping Label (for multiple items ordered) (wording is similar, may not be exact).  Scroll down and you'll see "Send Refund"  Select that and from there, select the Reason for the Refund from the dropdown, then you can write a message to your buyer.  Then input the amounts you want to refund by item, or you can give a refund applied to the whole order and not item specific (such as for a shipping discount).  "Review the refund" and "Select" and your done.  You'll receive an e-mail about the pending refund as will the buyer with your message you typed in,   Hope this helps and saves you time........patti

Best method of partial refund?

I have a buyer asking for a $50.00 refund on a $290 purchase, unit arrived damaged and I am OK with the amount but can't find anywhere to do a partial refund and 50% of the price is way to much. It has do be done via eBay since I am stuck with managed payments. Any help would be appreciated as I have tried all of the above.
