A Real Eye Opener, Side by Side Comparison eBay vs- PayPal Seller Protection & Support

These 2 situations could not have happened with better timing (both in the same week) for me to put to the test actual eBay & PayPal seller protection & support.   Both companies proudly promote in some way they "got your back" as a seller so if you are interested to see how they did in my real-life story, grab a cup of coffee.   First, I'll start with my positive experience with PayPal.   PayPal let me know a customer had opened a case for an unauthorized purchase through their financial institution.  PayPal said they valued my patience & business and provided links to their website resolution center where updates are provided.  PayPal promptly replied with information to the customer’s financial institution on my behalf.   In a few days, I got a message that the case was reviewed & covered under their PayPal seller protection, they were happy to inform me the case was now closed.   In this message they again thanked me for my patience & business.

Now let's review eBay's actual performance with my request for assistance as a 12-year member.  I received a return request on day 29 of 30 from the customer's receipt/delivery of a pair of shoes.   In the return request, the customer claimed I had sold them garbage and was very disappointed.   I contacted the customer immediately to return the shoes so we could inspect them for any defects we may have missed. I am very confident of what we sell as every pair of shoes is checked top to bottom, the soles are cleaned, laces are tied etc. They are then wrapped in eBay branded tissue paper, a personal thank you note is attached and then they are snuggly/safely packed in USPS or eBay branded packaging and sent almost always the same day to the customer.

When the return package came, it was truly unbelievable.  I opened the box and pieces of shoes fell out. It’s hard to describe how poor the condition was of the return shoes.  I promptly contacted the customer who politely asked for a full refund for the garbage I sold.  I thought if ever a time was, this was it, I needed eBay’s “got your back” help. So, for the first time ever of selling, I went to the website seller resolution center. I described the return details & timing, poor shoe condition, what the shoe damage looked like to me, provided photos side by side of original listing and what came back to me. I also pointed out a unique mark on the shoes in the original listing that was not on the return shoes.  I specifically asked for help because I had never dealt with this before.   In about a day, I received a message from eBay that the case had been closed, with a full refund to the buyer, purchase amount plus shipping. This is the actual eBay representative message I received, “We understand that you received your item in a different condition than you shipped it, but unfortunately, we couldn’t determine that this was caused by the buyer, or that this was something in the buyer’s control.  What?    In addition to that, eBay promptly added a transaction defect to my seller performance rating for reaching out for assistance through the resolution center.

So, that’s the end of my side by side comparison of the seller support.  You can make your own assessment.  We are certainly pausing to reconsider our relationship with eBay. I think maybe eBay could learn a lot from PayPal who delivered the support promoted to their valued customers.

I have at least 5 chargebacks pending from Paypal.    They all show delivered and there won't be a problem.     It is very cut and dry.

You will find if you have the same type of SNAD chargeback on Paypal,  you will have the same problem that you do on Ebay and you will loose.

Dishonest people are part of the cost of doing business.     It is frustrating .      My Sister in Law likes to game the system for returns for minor issues.    She prefers Amazon because she will most likely get the item and the refund.

I had the same response from eBay on Fender bass guitar I sold.  Same thing...damaged by the buyer.  I had photos from when it was sold and it  did no good.  EBay sided with the buyer...as they almost always do.   I feel we sellers put more money in their pockets yet we are treated the worst.   I knew it was going down hill when they eliminated negitive feedback for buyers some years ago.  We, the sellers don't mean much as attracting new buyers.   I have been on eBay for more than 18 years and it just doesn't  seem to get any  better.   I feel that soon I may close my store and walk away.

Never ask eBay to step in until AFTER you have refunded. It doesn't replace your cost, but you will save your account and the buyer will get a violation when you report her/him. If they are habitual, eBay will eventually limit their account, void their MBG or suspend them altogether.
Paypal would have also refunded the buyer in a Not as Described case, as long as the buyer had tracking that showed delivered to you. This is very different than a chargeback, where you can prove you sent (something) to the provided address.
When a case is closed in either platform, it CAN be reopened through appeals. Buyer typically wins, unless there is an obvious pattern of abuse on either platform. Your seller longevity and performance will not help you unless they are determining the buyer's account is in poor standing, they MIGHT look to see that your is in good standing for comparison measures only. So, don't let them give you a defect for a buyer's misuse of MBG. Just refund the thief, take the loss and report the buyer. I know it sounds like terrible advice, but you really will not get your money back in a case like this, even if the buyer gets suspended for it.

Thank you for replying, good information.   Do you (or anyone who reads this) happen to know if eBay provides any reporting on % of cases that are handled in favor of the buyer vs- seller using theses resolution tools they provide to us?

Just your personal metrics on your dashboard. I do not know of any for the overall percentages on the platform.

Thank you for replying.   I think that is probably correct that we only have our own personal information.  Maybe someone out there reading this will know if this type of accountability reporting actually exists.  It seems like that would be a very good information for eBay to have available to sellers as a check and balance for these resolution tools.

From a seller's persepctive, the great thing about Amazon is that they'll eventually suspend your sister-in-law's account ... here on eBay, on the other hand, they show her other items she might be interested in stealing.

It is a eye opener.  Whats worse is people are going to defend that this is just the way it is.  That this is the cost of selling here.  Well we wont except that.  There is no excuse for this to happen to good sellers.  Its happening to good sellers every day.  Its time for ebay to fix this and stop giving exuses.  Best regards

Hello,

I am sorry this has happened to you.

A question though for my own curiosity, were the shoes in question a pair of clarks?

I ask because I too have also had issues with buyer’s claiming clarks shoes fall apart when wearing them. The first time it happened I was convinced the buyer was lying and trying to get a new pair of shoes and was in the middle of a heated ebay message telling her what I thought she was doing, pawning off ratty old shoes as the new ones I’d sent her.

Then my husband (always a calming force) came by and looked at the photos of the shredded shoes (truly looked like they had been in a blender) and the photos of the shoes in my listing. We were able to find a few marks on the leather where we could definitely say they were the same shoes.

Her feedback (both received and left for others) was solid and she was very polite and nice in her message to me. I think my husband stopped me from making a huge mistake.

I sent  her an apology for the defective shoes and issued a full refund.

My  story doesn’t end with just one pair of Clarks though. It has happened with a few others, to the point where I leave most pairs behind when I’m sourcing for items to sell.   My sister (who also sells) has had the same thing happen to her as well with Clarks. I don’t know if it is the material the soles were made of at some point or not, but it’s happened enough that I think your buyer could be telling the truth.  They look new and in great condition, but fall apart after minimal use.

Just a thought.
