2 of 5 items broken in shipping

I had an order for 5 Ball vintage jars which I mailed to a buyer locally here in my city.  He in turn shipped them to China.  I packed the box very well I thought.  However when the box arrived in China 2 of the jar's lids were broken.   I would like to refund the buyer $8.00 for the broken jars but not sure what I need to do in order to do so.  Buyer left me a very negative comment on my page.  New to selling so learning all of this stuff.   Do I go through Ebay to send buyer the refund and how do I let him know that is what I intend on doing?

You delivered the order to the correct address and it was ok, right?  Your job is done.

Why would you refund them anything? You DID pack it well to the buyer in your city.

Did they tell you they forwarded it on to China?  Did you agree to pack it for remailing to China?

I  packed the package very well as I have always doneand received a msg from the buyer after I had already shipped it out to him here in Portland  that the package was going to China after he received it and he asked that I pack it especially well.  I told him that I had already mailed package but that I I did pack it well I used a lot of bubble wrap for each individual jar and also a lot of newspaper to wrap around the jars themselves.  Then almost 2 months later after shipping the  box to him locally he gave me a bad review on my page.  I would like to get that removed so I thought that if I refunded him $8.00 (total for 5 jars was $22.00 plus shipping) that maybe he would change his review of me.  I don't know I  am new to selling, not buying have been buying for years, but just trying to do my best on the selling aspect of this platform.

Do not do a refund, if you even mention a refund with hopes of feedback review then you get flagged by eBay.

What you need to do is contact eBay and let them know that item was forwarded to China.

I would have packed the jars and the lids in bubble wrap separately, and double boxed the entire order If I had sold them.

But I would not have offered this lot for $$22 plus shipping. I would not have offered them at all. Too much work for too little money.

I had a similar issue happen a year ago. If you have the buyer confirming they are forwarding the package in your Ebay messages, you should be able to have Ebay remove the feedback.
