I've never been fond of the helpful program.......but saw a new name leaving me one. Looked at the about me page (whatever it's called)........registered 9/27, left 1027 helpfuls......., lol, not all to me........

Was he one of the new sellers from Sri Lanka who seem to think that there's some advantage to accumulating Helpfuls and posts?

Came to this board this morning to post the very same thing.
Someone's trying to earn a new badge! LOL! The member I'm looking at has received five badges for all that work marking "helpfuls" in just three days! Their selling account must really be getting a boost from earning all those badges.
P.S. The count I'm looking at is currently 2,014 . . . been busy.

He's from Sri Lanka, so I guess so.............1 feedback from a seller, but has no items up....... I can't imagine doing that many helpfuls..........must have taken hrs.....
@eleanor*rigby mines @1035..........so 2 different people.

Interestingly, I just read the rules of engagement.........abuse of helpfuls is one, but I don't guess it applies in these cases:
Do not abuse Helpfuls. This includes soliciting others for helpfuls, giving an excessive number of helpfuls to a specific user or users, using multiple accounts to give yourself or others multiple helpfuls, and marking another member’s posts as helpful to help them get to the top of leaderboards.

I got one today as well. Joined eBay on 9/24/21, joined community boards on 9/27/21 and has already left 2,014 helpfuls. Are they doing this to try to get us to leave them helpfuls? Won't work with me.
I don't have the give helpfuls turned on because it was slowing down my pathetic DSL connection too much so I turned off Helpfuls and turned off Signatures just to be able to move through the posts.

You and I must be looking at the same member, judging by the 2014 helpfuls.
The member doesn't have any posts, though, so s/he can't be fishing for helpfuls. S/he can't get helpfuls without any posts . . .
I still contend it's a "badge" thing. Somewhere, someone planted the idea that all this Community stuff--number of new threads, number of posts, number of helpfuls, number of badges--enhances their selling account somehow.

Yes, it must be the same one. When I look at that ID profile it does say it has made one post but that post appears to have been removed so I'm guessing they made a post and then started passing out the Helpfuls in hopes that we would all flock to that one post to give them helpfuls.

@eleanor*rigby do you happen to know where that misinformation is posted? I'd like to go to the source (YouTube, publication, news article, ect) and ask if they can remove this misinformation. Especially since we all know that posting cadence in Community doesn't impact an individual's feedback score.
Does anyone know where specifically this misinformation is posted?

I think that the idea about community badges (or kudos) being useful to improve a seller's "trustability" or "status" started because of the massive influx of new/potential sellers from Sri Lanka asking about community badges
I think that many of their questions are related to lessons or assignments from the eBay Seller School, so that might be the source. Anyway, you should check with these OPs, to find out why they were asking about badges:
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Getting-Started/Community-badges/td-p/31557282
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Share-Community-Platform/eBay-Community-Badge/td-p/31891377

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/seller-school/td-p/32255675
Personally, I think that the pursuit of badges for the badges' sake, is a violation of the spirit of the community guidelines, if not the letter. I think that a member who has given thousands of helpfuls but has had no other activity in the community or on eBay, and doesn't even have a feedback page on eBay, is not really participating or contributing to either eBay or the community.

I don't know the source, Sheila. I do know there have been a number of posts asking about how to earn badges, etc., from the Sri Lankan members.
It is an assumption on my part that they're being told that participation in the Community somehow enhances their selling accounts via higher visibility or in some other fashion, or lends credibility to their selling account.
Several of these members are simply copy/pasting other people's questions from Reddit or Quora discussions and posting those in new threads as if they were their own questions/situations. They are also copy/pastings each other's questions and reposting them as though they were original. It appears they've been coached or "schooled" on how to post on the boards, but to what end? Hard to say . . .
We've also seen these members give solutions to replies that are obviously not solutions--not to offend anyone who's received a solution. Even I've received one or two that asked the OP a follow-up question and could certainly not be considered a solution to anything.
It makes sense to see all these new topics, helpfuls, solutions, etc., if one looks at the badges available to Community participants. It's not too much of a stretch to come to the conclusion that they're attempting to earn those badges.
Shortly after they all started posting, I did a quick Google search of potential sites that might be counseling these members, and most of the results involved YouTube channels that were in their native language. I listened to one for maybe 15 minutes, and recognized the phrase "discussion boards" (IIRC), since it apparently doesn't translate well. If eBay has anyone on staff who speaks the language, it might be helpful to listen to them.
If I run across anything more concrete, I'll let you know. In the meantime, you know how assumptions can miss the mark and appearances can be misleading . . . but you also know the saying about how to identify a duck.
Let me know through an @ tag or private message if I can provide any further information.

Check YouTube for videos/channels dedicated to Sri Lankans interested in selling on eBay. You'll find videos on those exact topics.

Yes, I have done that.
But, I 'm not willing to waste my time watching youtube videos in a language I don't understand listening for loan words or phrases in English that give a hint as to what they are saying.
sheila@ebay can do that herself, or give it as an assignment to one of her employees or interns, and pay them the going rate for their time and effort. She isn't going to pay me my hourly rate to do it (which is a lot higher than her employees cost).

sheila@ebay Why doesn't someone from Ebay ask them? We've tried on the discussion boards to some extent, to no avail, but I'll bet they would respond to someone from Ebay with a title after their name......... Most of the school questions have been moved to the tools board I think..........not that we get any notification of threads being moved any more...........

Wow. Okay.
I didn't suggest anywhere in my post that you had to watch any videos. The titles of the videos are in English. If you intended the above as an insult, it was not lost on me; however, I'm not sure of the motive.
My goodness.
