The "Updated Community Guidelines" thread is now closed, but I just ran across a member profile that can perhaps shed some light on whether more is involved with the rankings than just how many posts a member has made.
This person has a "Rockstar" designation.
Based on this member's profile, you were certainly correct: there are more factors that enter into the rankings than posts alone.

In this case, this Community member might be gaming Community by giving kudos, hence they have the reason why they have the Rockstar status.
I plan on working on revamping the ranks the later half of this year. I also would love to hear from Community on ranking names that make sense for eBay. Once I start working on ranks, I'll create a post to ask for feedback.

A "rockstar" with zero posts! That's something special. How did you even find them? Are they from a certain island nation in the Indian Ocean?

If you can't drop them entirely, then I would recommend:
(1) fewer categories. There are currently 13 badge ranks from "Enthusiast" to "Legend." About 5 or 6 would be plenty.
(2) Use titles that are clearly hierarchical without the need to reference a list, and which make sense without regard to the eBay context. I'd choose names like "newbie" and "expert."
If you're messing around with display stuff: it would be useful for the original post in each thread to automatically show where the poster is registered.

I'm not sure what your post means.
I posted the details of the profile in the context of the discussion about how members are assigned "Rockstar" status. It was put forth that the rankings were based solely on the number of posts a member had submitted. The profile clearly illustrates that the rankings are based on something other than that criterion.
I don't know what is meant by "gaming Community by giving kudos," or what "hence they have the reason why they have the Rockstar status" means. My thread was only addressing how rankings are or are not assigned.

I don't imagine revamping the ranks will be any more popular than any other changes to the Community, one way or another.

Renaming the ranks........will not solve anything.......
Doing away with them AND helpfuls would go a long way toward curbing the "extraneous" cute/sarcastic remarks that take threads off topic and demean serious answers that are pertinent to the topic.
We are adults here, or should be, .....not a bunch of kids trying to earn a gold star.
My opinion.......

No helpfuls, no names...how is a person who asks a question supposed to know who to believe and trust? Sometimes there are just plain wrong answers given. Posting IDs cause problems too. Who to trust??

Even having solutions is no real answer. How many people reiterate a post and choose their own response as a solution? How many people choose the wrong one (the one that aligns with their opinion)? Many don't choose a solution even though there is one or multiple people have said the same thing. This is not an easy feat to be sure.

Once in a while, I wonder whether I should report a solution acceptance to the mods for reversal, when a poster selects a solution that is utterly wrong. After all, the OP who asked the question in the first place is the usually the poster who is LEAST qualified to judge whether an answer is correct.

Posting numbers, Helpfuls, solutions, rank titles, etc. are all subjective and flawed systems but IMHO throwing them all out just because they can be manipulated would leave OP's in a position of being even more baffled when they get conflicting advice in their threads and more likely to accept mistaken advice. The mischief-makers who now abuse the helpfuls and such would find new ways to demonstrate their childishness.
Many of us, if we couldn't just click on Helpful as a way of expressing "That's what i would have said if I'd gotten here sooner," would repost the correct advice or give our own version of it, just to outweigh any misleading replies, which would lead to long list of "me too" posts.

I just read a post today asking how to receive helpfuls. They honestly think that helps them have some kind of seniority. Yes, it was SL.

I swear, I still cannot see any rational reason for this flood of hundreds if not thousands of clueless postings from just that one country alone. Google tells me that there are 195 countries in the world, but in the category of Country with the Most Number of Clueless Posters to eBay Community Groups, #1 is them, and I have no idea what other country could possibly come close enough to be in second place. It just defies description.

So the member in the image supplied by pburn just comes into the boards solely to give other's kudo's, what on earth is the purpose of that?
And why is the leader board so important to some?
On our boards in Au, there is no notation of enthusiast or rock star, I wondered what on earth that was all about when I first came here and I also don't understand the reason for badges either.....
If I can't spend it, I can't see why I need it LOL

I've been aware of this user for a while, because they give out a lot of helpfuls, and I've gotten some of them. I noticed because once or twice, I recognized the name and went to look at their posts, and didn't find any. So the user ID stuck in my mind. IIRC, they usually give a helpful to every post including the OP.
You might recognize the user ID yourself, you have quite a few.
