Paypal charge fees on what your monthly turnover is. Depending on how much your sales are each month will determine how much in fees Paypal charge. Off the top of my head (this is UK) up to £1500 its 3.4% Up to £6000 its 2.9% and thereafter it drops again. Don't forget on top of this they charge 20p (again UK sorry don't know what US charges are) per item.

You are located in the USA. Paypal charges 2.9% + .30 transaction fee. If the buyer is located outside of the USA (or has a non-USA Paypal account, can't remember which), then Paypal charges 4.4% .

Looking at mine today, mine is 5%of my total sales for the last 30 days. I have 87 sales to date, 15% EBAY, 26% shipping and 5% Paypal. If you do a refund,it probably makes a difference. I don't think Paypal refunds their fee to the seller like EBAY does?

PP also charges fees over taxes that is how you got that number.
Now the best one I just found out: PP also keeps processing fees even if the order was put in a minute ago and cancelled. You don't want to get a return with an angry buyer so you agreed to cancel and as a thank you, on a 10$ item you pay 1$ in processing fees (including taxes) Yes you work for PP and eBay. PP told me to just call it costs of doing business, WHAT??? it seems more like stealing, but they can do that with lobbyers making the laws.
