I do not believe they have updated that in a long time.

Last I heard in any official statements was at the beginning of 2018, where they said they will be holding off on enforcement of text or artwork.

With that said, according to our testing, removing borders DOES have a positive affect on impressions. Not a huge affect, but it does help. Removing text does not seem to have any affect positive or negative.

This may change at any time. But for now, many top sellers still have text/borders. But as I mentioned, we have noted borders do negatively affect, in our research.

eBay gave a sellers a chance to remove the photos, but adding new listings with text is against the rules.

Not according to the policy  see link provided above.

One reason but it is not the only reason but one reason is because eBay buys ads for its sellers that eBay pays for themselves and there are requirements in order for your listings to be shown in the ads and pictures are one of the areas along with required attributes.

eBay wants to buy more of these ads as the historical data has proven to produce more sales by which eBay collects a FVF from.  The ads obviously cost much less than the returns they get from the FVFs.

I know what it says on that page.

What I am saying is based directly on actual research data to see if it made a difference or not. Not just on our own listings, but based on other high volume sellers as sample groups.

Even if you speak to eBay over the phone, they say they will likely not punish users who do not follow this policy. The enforcement was put on hold, possibly indefinitely.

With that said, at any time they may change how they enforce these policies. But as of right now, borders are causing somewhat of a penalty, text or mild watermarks does not seem to be.

The seller in our category who has had the highest gains of impressions in 2018, has frames, watermarks, or both on their listings (depending which template they used).

This is why you may see me complain about these eBay best practices often - you see eBay recommending so many things, but in reality, those things do not reward sellers with visibility. They often harm visibility more than help.

It has gotten to a point that it is dangerous to follow eBay's advice. We followed it this year, and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales, and our impressions dropped to under half of what it is now. Meanwhile, sellers who did not follow eBay's advice flew up the charts.

I would not mind adapting to these changes if they were actually rewarded, or factual. But so far in 2018, adapting to the recommendations in 2018 has hurt our position.

I am still waiting for the day that free returns and guaranteed delivery actually reward sellers with performance in search better than those who do not adopt these things. So far, those who adopted those things in my category have dropped off the chart.

I think you can do whatever you want unless someone rats on you.

I see plenty of watermarks, sellers names, text, etc on photos.

Here is another part to the equation.  Yes I am sure some new listing get through with the picture violations, but ebay has already said GTC listing with text or watermarks that you active before the policy went into effect will remain good until the seller ends the listing.

This actions for sellers have two things they need to think about.

  1. Should I keep my pictures with the added info in them because it helps in making sales?
  2. Should I make my pictures up to date so my listings will qualify for eBay external ads by which more exposure will create more sales?
