I have had a few first class package items that we bought postage for and either dropped them off at the PO or they were picked up and they have went missing without any scans at all, resulting in refunds and one neg, anyone else have this happen?

Yep, last yr........not recently, we take everything to the PO and GET A RECEIPT which guarantees the acceptance scan. If you can't do that........talk to your postman on the pickups and tell him/bribe with small gifts of cookies or a $5.......how important it is...... If the substitute is the problem, talk to the Postmaster......

I Now live in town outside Dallas. Earlier in the year, I bring my items into be scanned, THEY REFUSED at the counter. Well, that was a first.
The said I could scan myself. I did. The machine did give a receipt BUT, sign CLEARLY stated just because it is scanned is DEIFFERENT than being accepted. Mind you I am in the PO's lobby and put items in their box.
Good news, all items made it.
My only recommendation, if you live in a city with multiple PO's find one with some customer service skills, try to help them out a go at low peak times. Get a scan receipt at all costs.
That was one of the last straws related to online selling. I have pretty much stop selling here and have to confess the reason isn't all because of eBay.

Not in years. I learned a long time ago to wait in line at the PO and have the items weighed, scanned and obtain a receipt. Tracking information is usually uploaded and available in under an hour. The receipt also has the package weight which in one case helped me defend and win a NAD case with a buyer who claimed they received an empty box.

Many small rural areas do not have the equipment to print out a computer receipt. They are referred to as manual offices. In that case, you can ask to see it actually scanned ( they do have hand scanners ) but if you want a receipt, they have to hand write the tracking number on a blank all purpose USPS receipt and then stamp it with their local official stamp. A friend of mine goes through this every day. Rural area offices lose money, so they do not get advanced equipment.

That's pretty much it, yes, although the assigned tracking number comes off a pad of preprinted labels, and each one includes a little side sticker with the barcode and number on it that is stuck on your payment receipt (see photo), so that no one has to try and hand-write those big long tracking numbers:
This is what I received when mailing a buyer's First Class Package while I was on vacation last month in Union Pier, MI. In the background is the United States Post that serves the town. (It used to be the United States Post Office until the "Office" part fell off the front of the building.) The office occupies one half of a little strip-mall commercial building (I think the other half was vacant), and on Saturdays is open from 9:00 a.m. all the way through until 11:00 a.m. I noticed later that the circular datestamp visible on the lower right corner was actually dated September 10 by mistake, as no one remembered to change its date when opening up in the morning.
To their credit, the package I shipped on Saturday morning was going through Grand Rapids by that evening, and was actually delivered in California on the Monday afternoon following. I think not having to ship it through Chicago probably helped.
P.S. Yes, that is a duck looking over the top of my hand. Our daughter tells us that his name is Laszlow, and he rides in the corner of the dashboard wherever we go.

We always drop off our packages at the counter and request a receipt. That have to give you a receipt by law. The receipt is generated by them scanning the packages.

We live in a very rural area. The post office has up to date equipment and have for years. Population 202

If your rural office has updated equipment that gives out a computer generated receipt, then you are very fortunate. ( maybe someone has connections, maybe it is your state? ) Most get refurbished equipment at best if they get it at all. That comes from a rural postmaster who has no such thing. They do not know any small POs near them who do.
