One of my items sold today...the buyer doesn't want it shipped until the 17th. My set up says I'll have it shipped within two days. Will eBay ding my reputation for following the buyer's instructions?

Yes, ebay will count it as a late shipment but also the buyer can file an item not received on the 18th and get their money back while the item is enroute.

Tell your seller that you can not do that. It is harmful to your selling account on Ebay. Ebay has requirements for sellers to meet and this would cause you to get a defect. Ask them to have their local post office hold their mail until they return from wherever it is they are going.
It is very simple for anyone to do this. They likely can do it online too. But if not, they can call tomorrow and get it handled.

When rules or policies, overrule what a buyer may want, contact & inform your buyer.

When this happened to me in the past the buyer agreed to cancel then purchased later. It was a unique item though that they could not get from someone else (hand carved wood item). They were really nice about it and had no idea it would count against me.

Yes it will hit your account as a late shipment and the buyer can file an INR because it didn't show up on time. Tell the buyer you can't do that without damage to your selling account. If they insist, ask them to cancel and reorder when they can accept the shipment.

Yes - but the ding can be removed if you follow these steps:
The buyer needs to request the delay through eBay messaging (if request came in another form send message to buyer "Please confirm you wish me to delay shipping your item until July 17th?". Respond with "Per your request I am delaying shipping your package until July 17".
You will get an eBay ding. Contact eBay support and reference the buyers request to delay in messaging. eBay support will have the ding removed. I don't get many requests. This has always worked for me. A little bit of a hassle for you to contact eBay support - but it can be done.
Nothing wrong with doing as others have said. My solution puts the burden of dealing with eBay support on you - not something I ever look forward to...

That highlights the importance of sellers KNOWING what Ebay expects from them. You and all sellers should know what stats Ebay keeps and how they work. I encourage EVERY seller to monitor their Seller Dashboard closely. At least once a week. So you may be able to head off serious problems before they happen.
