last night i had a auction that went for 430 lots of people bidding and item was probably worth about 500.
i got a message this morning from the winning bidder that he did not bid that high and only bid to 300 and not sure why he won. he also said could you please work with me and sell it to me for 300.
i told him that why would i do that when there are many other bidders that wanted the item that bid well over 300 dollars. i said i will cancel the order and did.
i sent 2nd chance offer for 2nd highest bidder for 425, couple other bidders over 400 that i could offer too as well, but i was selling it in auction just to recoup some buying money cause i spent a lot on inventory this month and wanted some quicker cash.
buyer does buy a lot off me but he only bids auctions and only gets them when they end lower than normal.
not sure if i should report that cause he has never left me feedback for recent past sales and looked and he won about 25 auctions the past 45 days.
you made a mistake that's fine i can cancel but to try to swindle someone down after that auction. that's absurd.
what would you do ,just leave it alone he does buy a lot but always looking for a deal. i think i am just going to leave it at that but that offer kinda ticked me off. curious what you all would do.

Not certain I would have cancelled for that Buyer - would have let the UPI process run the 4 days so they incurred the strike.
If it sold once, it will sell again. I get that this Buyer has purchased quite a bit from you and you have FB exposure from all the purchases, but at some point you need to realize this Buyer is taking advantage of you. Or at least, based on what you have stated.

If he is a repeat customer he may have made an honest bidding mistake but I believe you took the proper action. There is no way I would have sold it for the $300 he was offering. He is also aware of the fact that somebody else bid just a bit below him and would probably take the second chance offer once you canceled his bid. I would have added to your response and explained while I can understand that he may have made an error in bidding that you could not accept $300 but would be more than happy to cancel his purchase with buyer requested cancelation that you had other bidders that would probably take the second chance offer.

Well... I'm not one to recommend ever sending a repeat buyer away. With that in mind, I understand why you cancelled the bid. And, 'Yes' to the 2nd chance offers... I mean, you did want to sell it, after all...
I wouldn't 'report' the buyer to anyone over price or feedback, but I would sure make a note of it for future dealings.

after i wrote this the 2nd highest bidder wants to accept the offer but for some reason it will not let him but the item cause now it says freight shipping contact seller for quote. he cannot make the purchase so i just added it to my ebay store much higher and told him to just offer the 425. not sure why 2nd chance offer is glitching out like that. the guy bought the other item i had in auction and really wants this wood plane as well.
i sold two clifton wood planes a no 5 adn no 7 guy who i sent 2nd chance offer to bought and won the no 5. he paid already for it but its not lettign him buy through 2nd chance offer.

Maybe he just made an honest mistake and bid his proxy higher than he thought - if he buys quite a bit, maybe he is confusing auctions some how.
Your statement in your OP about him only winning from you when it goes lower than normal is what prompted my earlier reply. He is a repeat buyer, but appears to be a bargain-only repeat buyer?
Hope you can solve the issue with the second-chance buyer.

Since buyer cancellations are a request, Not an entitlement
Perhaps this buyer simply wants to try & get out from having to tender payment & not receive a strike for refusal to pay.

I stopped doing auctions loooong time ago, because people bid out of control. When its time to pay, that's another story. You have to chase them... Now, I only do BIN. I just got rid of the "Best Offer" and stopped sending "Best Offers Eligible". When some one ask me for a lower price, I just go ahead and explain that I am not taking any offers. Or just don't reply. This has help me keep my sanity. Good luck on your selling journey...

Do not disagree - if you see my original reply to the OP, I indicated I would not have cancelled, but based it on his OP in totality and especially that his buyer appeared, based on the OP's statement to be a bargain-buyer only.
If the Buyer can retaliate with a bunch of FB, appears that was a concern of the OP until further research shows Buyer leaves none for anyone. Still could be a issue and no idea how much/often the Buyer spends with the OP. Might be a lot of revenue - only the OP knows how best to proceed, we do not have enough details.

yes definitely a bargain only buyer, i let him build up sales and combine shipping for him as well. usually he check out every two weeks. i made the mistake one time he asked about items that i had that were not listed i took a bunch of pics and sent him those and just said make a offer on what you want and i can make a special listing, i do that for a few people but only keep doing it for those that make a good fair offer. he's looking for flea market prices. i live in the hills of new hampshire so i buy a lot and list maybe half of it so i have stuff to sell all winter. we only get like 7 months of good weather and picking for stuff i sell is tough as it is. once winter comes the snow messes everything up. still estate sales and stuff but those are tough to get stellar deals. i like to offer my regulars a chance to buy items that i might list a few months down the line.

i keep the auctions going only for rare wanted stuff and if i get it very cheap i'll auction it to get money flowing in. sometimes i am very surprised how much things can go but also things tend to go very low as well but it does help keep funds coming in and more buying money for more stuff. i think i will eventually get rid of auctions though. i used to have a account with my wife back in 99 we started it and did till ebay started taking there share of money i think 2009 maybe 2010-11 i can't remember. closed the account and just before covid started a new account no wife on there. been doing good so far but this past 3 weeks i have had issue after issue with all kinds of stuff. GSP confiscating stuff and GSP deliveries taking forever. also have a credit card company put a claim in cause buyer does not recognize the sale. i got a difficult buyer wanted crazy demands on shipping, and this. also had a huge ebay glitch were they were marking all my ups shipments no tracking uploaded but its clearly in the system took them a month to fix that.......
i was mentioning my old account cause back then auctions were the hot thing back then

I get it, you want to keep money coming in, so you can buy additional items. In my case, I rather do research, do more research and do more research. And when I list, I list high as BIN. I can always lower the price down.
As an example, I was going to list 1 watch for only $50 to $100, with out much research. But I stop my self, and did bunch of research. Once I did the research, I listed the watch for $248. I took a better offer of $230. The other nice thing about this, it was that I sold it within 5 minutes to a buyer from China. I didn't had to chase the buyer at all.

I would have first thanked him for being a great customer and for placing his bid. Then I would have explained that I cannot possibly sell it for 300. He may have actually placed an incorrect bid that was more than he wanted to spend. Next I would ask him if he would like to cancel the sale. If he didn't respond in 24 hours I would cancel the sale and move on with either relisting or 2nd chance offer to the next highest bidder.
