I have gotten two messages, similar to this, from the same guy, that I suspect are suspicious:
"Hello I am seller on ebay as well I had a transaction with this newbie who has stopped payment saying he didn't get it and then said he did. Tracking shows he got it. You had a transaction with him not that far back , Any problems with him he is (he inserted the ebay name for one of my customers here) |
Is this possibly some type of scam or phishing? If so, how do I report it to ebay?

No, it is another seller who is having a problem with a buyer, that seller has gone through that buyer's feedback and is contacting previous sellers to see if this buyer has a history of problems... You can do whatever you like, personally I don't see much use in entertaining this conversation, I would ignore but you can answer it honestly as well, it makes no difference.

Did you receive this message through the eBay messaging system?
I'm aware of any number of sellers who contact other sellers about "problem" buyers. Some sellers try to gather information to support a case for a false SNAD dispute or an appeal of an eBay decision.
This message isn't asking you for any personal data like your name, phone number, PayPal account info, or anything even remotely similar.
I would take the message at face value. Just limit the communication to eBay's messaging system (no texting, calling, etc.) and, of course, never give out any personal or contact information, if it does happen to come to that.

I think it is rude, but not something 'reportable'. I'd not let it take any of my time... that seller can enter their transaction blindly (like you did) with the buyer. "Appreciate any help"... yeah, right. 🙄

Tagging on.
Legitimate, standard, understandable question I've been asked many times over the years, and have myself asked that question of other sellers more than a few times.

I disagree to the other two answwrs.
This person can see the names of your sellers but not the names of your buyers. So just how did they end up looking at your profile, and how did they conclude you had a transaction with a specific buyer since buyer names are masked? You can see your buyer's name but other people can't. They can see all their buyer's names but they can't see your buyer user names.

They looked at their problem buyer's FB left for others?

Probably not.
I have combed through buyers feedback they have given and if I find other sellers that have fallen for the same fake snad or partial refund trick or whatever I will advise them it would be a good idea to report that buyer if they haven't.

Yeah. I suppose so, and I was wrong about not seeing seller names-I can see other seller names in fb, Anyway, if they didn't pay then the seller probably didn't leave feedback, thus no trail. Anyway, it's not a good idea to try to find out about their payment record. For one, if they had a record of more than one unpad claim then they would've been blocked from bidding. Burden on the seller to block unpaid bidders.

I think you've misunderstood what has transpired. The OP sold an item to a "troublesome" buyer. The OP left feedback for that buyer. "Jon" has also sold an item to the "troublesome" buyer. Jon can see the feedback YOU left for the "troublesome" buyer on their feedback page--including your full member id. All Jon has to do is click on your member id to take him to YOUR member profile page and send you a message through the "Contact" link.
I'm having a troublesome transaction with you, so I look up YOUR feedback page. I see you made a purchase from ABC seller and XYZ seller. I can see those sellers full member id--and it's a link. I click on their member id link right from your feedback page and click on the contact button.
Go to my feedback page, and you'll see the full member id for every seller I've purchased from. THAT'S how "Jon" was able to contact the OP.
The circuit started with the BUYER'S feedback page, not the OP's.

"Unpaid bidders" are not what "Jon" is asking about. If you reread the OP's post, Jon's buyer paid, but has stopped payment (?) claiming an INR. There's a difference between a "stop payment" and never having paid at all. A seller can't file an UID if the buyer has paid for the item.

Personally, asking another seller to discuss the particulars of a transaction is not a good move. I agree with mtgraves7984.
I would feel uncomfortable in sharing that information with a total stranger, ebay seller or not.
If the seller (not the OP) is having a problem, they need to follow ebay's procedures or ask for guidance.
These boards are an excellent source of information.
I would probably respond to the seller with some vague answer such as, "Gee, I am sorry I can't quite remember...I wish I could help you...."

I would respond to the seller with some guidance on making sure that he uploads the tracking number to the INR dispute, and assure him that it will be closed in his favor as long as it shows as Delivered to the City and ZIP of the Ship-To address received with the payment.
There's no need to tell him of your own experience with that buyer because it really doesn't matter. I would not address that part of the question at all, and once the seller gets himself out of the INR, he can put the problem buyer on his Blocked Bidder List and forget about him.
Come to think of it, I would also pass along the link to the Blocked Bidder List...

I've done this when I've had a problem with a buyer. Usually I contact the people who received negs from this buyer as I assume the other transactions went OK if positive feedback was left (and I'm not going to contact a ton of people just in case there was a problem).
If everything went OK with this buyer just tell the seller you had no problems with him. If you did have a problem he's gathering information so he can resolve a problem he has with the buyer.
In any event, it's not some sort of scam, it's just another seller who needs some help.

You look up your buyer to see who they left feedback to, or received feedback from. On your buyer's profile, the seller's name shows up. You don't look at the seller's profile to get the name of the buyer, and the seller who sent the note doesn't know who the seller is until he looks at his buyer's feedback.
