I have gotten two messages, similar to this, from the same guy, that I suspect are suspicious:
"Hello I am seller on ebay as well I had a transaction with this newbie who has stopped payment saying he didn't get it and then said he did. Tracking shows he got it. You had a transaction with him not that far back , Any problems with him he is (he inserted the ebay name for one of my customers here) |
Is this possibly some type of scam or phishing? If so, how do I report it to ebay?

I would feel uncomfortable in sharing that information with a total stranger, ebay seller or not.
If the seller (not the OP) is having a problem, they need to follow ebay's procedures or ask for guidance.
These boards are an excellent source of information.
I would probably respond to the seller with some vague answer such as, "Gee, I am sorry I can't quite remember...I wish I could help you...."
When I've done it the seller I contacted received a neg, and usually a pretty bad one. Sellers who get undeserved negs are usually willing to help out other sellers who have problems with the same buyer.
I would not blindly contact people who had transactions with a buyer "in case" one of them had a problem. I don't have time for that.

Prob not a scam - I have done it or something similar myself also a few years back - when a buyer with a habit of leaving negs saying 'fakes - ebay refunded' - i got one for a factory sealed vintage collector perfume i purchased at an estate sale and she bought for over $100 - buyer told ebay it was fake - ebay refunded and told her to keep it. I was out the $100 and the perfume and since she had left that fb for so many others, I wanted to document it as part of my complaint to ebay. I'm not sure if anything came of it, but the one other seller I contacted was very happy to hear from me as they were newer in the selling game and had been so upset as this buyer was nasty and made them cry for days! To find out it was a game/habit for this buyer was a relief and she also reported/complained - she had no idea how before.

Probably not a scam.
I had a total a$$ of a buyer a month or so back, brand new account, checked his left feedback and he had left negative or neutral feedback for every single order he had placed (~10), so I contacted the other sellers asking them to report him to eBay so that little **** could have buying restrictions placed on their account, and they could remove the feedback (don't know if eBay ended up doing it for other sellers, but they did remove the feedback he had left me)
