If I bought it, ebay fees would be $75.00 + .40 (transaction fee)

(I live in a state without sales tax or am tax-exempt)

there are options available to you as seller that may increase that fee, but they are all options.

13.25% of the TOTAL SALE (item + the shipping + the sales tax).

If the shipping were approx.  $20 and the sales tax in the state the buyer is in is approx. 10%

Ebay would keep about $75.00.

You would get about $425.00.

Depends, does the $500 include shipping?

Does not matter if shipping is included, eBay still takes their cut.

@dr.-bond   Interesting.  You are an experienced seller, are you saying you don't know how Ebay charges their fees or how much they charge?  Have you looked at the Policy page for Selling Fees?

no need to hypothesize and add variables...it is a simple question...

"...if I sell a bag for $500 what will Ebay take as its fee..."

Sale = $500.00

15% Fee = $75.00

transaction fee = .40

Total Fee = $75.40

no further input is required.....

did not ask about:

shipping (which is not a fee anyway)

sales tax

promoted listings

pay-per-click-

bold listings

reserve price

3 day auctions

or any other "optional" variables that may increase the "fee".....

KISS

keep it simple

 Thanks Jimmy!

Why do you think ebay charges more to sell a purse than a widget?

I'm in a 9 1/4% locality. You'd pay $81.94 in FVFs (incurred on the item price alone) if I bought the bag from you.

Note that these ^^^ are FVFs only... no reference to Promotions, per-order fee or any other listing upgrades.

Don't forget to include the shipping cost (if charged) & sales tax (if charged) in the total when figuring the 15% fees.

government taxes some things more to discourage that type item being purchased and tax some things much less to encourage that type item being purchased, I would say that ebay does the same thing.

That is fine as long as the OP does not come back after the sale and wonder why the eBay fees were more than what was stated in the simple response to their question.

My guess would be......

- Because the competition is charging 15% or more

- Because many handbags go through the Authentication program which definitely adds extra costs for eBay

I sell in  Media which is also a 15% FVF, the rate went up just a few months after Amazon increased their fee rates for Media.

You should know upfront that I totally respect you and many of your replies....

But, what is wrong with my response?

The OP did not ask what should they expect the FVF fee to be if they sell a handbag for $500.00

As I stated, if I bought it, the OP lives 5 miles from me so there is no shipping involved...

(they did not mention shipping at all)

I utilized my buying account which is exempt from sales tax. So there are no additional numbers to input.

So, if they sell me the handbag for $500.00, the only fees would be 15% of the sale + .40 transaction fee.

Now, if they asked about a typical sale, then there would be a different, boiler plate answer.
