buyer opened return on two of the same items (purchased separately),
ebay auto accepted both
one was returned & refunded.
pretty sure she is keeping the other one
and it is past the deadline for that return
how do I close the return request as the only option is to have ebay 'step in'?

If the deadline has past for the buyer to upload a tracking number for the return of the second item, you can phone eBay and ask them to close the return. They can do it right away and there's no defect or anything for you.

I was hoping you wouldn't say 'call'...
why on earth isn't this automatic?
or at least a 'button' to click!

You can also ask eBay to step in. Both paths will result in the same outcome. You can also just let it time out as well. I think after 21 days it times out and eBay closes them automatically.
Good Luck Selling!

Many just call to close these.

They don't auto close these types of claims because Ebay doesn't always know if the buyer and seller have agreed to give the buyer more time.
I don't suggest escalating the claim in the hopes that Ebay closes it in your favor. That to me is risky. Because if they don't, then the buyer will get refunded and you will get a defect on your account.
I personally would not take that chance. I would take a moment and call Ebay when it is one full day past the date they were suppose to ship the item back by. I'd be on the phone with them while the closed the claim in my favor.
