have a bidder that's heck bent on paying with paypal on a local pickup

Told them I would require cash for the item when they picked it up.  ( they still want to pay me via paypal when they pick up the item)

Explained to them that I would not be able to provide tracking if they paid  via paypal  and I would get a ding if I wasn't able to provide tracking.

I do have local pick up as an option in this auction ....how should I proceed ?

Wouldn't it be possible for a buyer to pick up the item, then go home and send the seller an eBay message saying, "I was there.  Where were you?  We need to set up another time for me to pick up my item."

If eBay is looking at messages, this would look as if the buyer had not picked up the item when in fact he had.

Sure anything is possible  but  this scenario is unlikely . I realize there are dishonest people  around  but IMO  the chances  of this happening  are probably slim . If a seller is that concerned  then  they should have the buyer sign a bill of sale when they come for the pick up. If it's a really expensive item  then get a notary as a witness . Tulips

But it is like Russian Roulette. You were lucky and got the empty chamber (you got honest buyers). Thing is you don't know if this buyer is or is not honest. The person could be trying to protect themselves from a fraudulent transaction or be planning a fraud against the seller. I would say Paypal only with tracking and no local pick up.

Of course it really doesn't matter, as it is in my opinion, the buyers can commit fraud against a seller regardless. It seems to be the way the platform is set up. Is strange all these years I have been buying on here I had no idea how rampant theft and fraud was on E nv sy. Is very sad indeed! 😥😒🤔

Some items are too heavy and cumbersome  to be shipped  without losing your shirt . Local pick up is ideal in these cases .  tulips

Have them bring their phone with them with the ebay app loaded. Mark the item as paid and Have them mark the item as "received" right there in front of you.

Couldn't it be unmarked later ? I don't know ,, I never tried . Tulips

Yes you have a point there but if the person is insisting on a payment method were fraud could occur then they can use that method but I would insist on actually shipping the item as that is the way the platform they are requesting to use is set up.

Agreed. One can only hope PayPal and credit card issuers are true to their word about not enforcing buyer protection in  this case.

There really doesn't seem to be a good alternative. Some people want to sell things on eBay that make sense to offer only as local pickup, but those sellers have to accept PayPal, but PayPal and credit card issuers may not protect them from all the possible outcomes--even though they claim they will (or won't, depending on how you look at it).

"What's a seller to do?" she asked rhetorically.

wouldn't one have the advantage of filing a local police report if a buyer tried to pull this with pp?

Yes you would.

Meet some place with a lot of cameras like the front of Walmart or a major grocery store.

You won't get dinged for not providing tracking . I've sold two electric wheelchairs and  two or three animal cages  on e bay using the local pick up only  method . All of the buyers used Pay Pal  to complete the transactions  before they came to pick up their items . As soon as they left I simply marked the items as '' sent '' ,, never added a tracking number since I couldn't anyway  but never had a single problem arise from it.  That's been my own personal experience anyway . Tulips

I've done this before and it took a couple of months to show up but suddenly I had a ding for late tracking upload and verification. I didn't have any problems with the actual transaction though, other than eBay's AI getting in the way of coordinating a place to meet since it "threatens" you if it sees you sending an address or telephone or e-mail.
