How on earth is ebay able to charge final value fees on the sales tax they collect, and supposedly send to the appropriate states?? I know, I know, I haven't been paying attention - but my fvf's have skyrocketed - usually way over 20%

Same way that all processors have charged stores for Credit Cards used since the invention of credit cards in the 1940s.
On the total.
Quite transparent BEFORE you choose to list

How on earth is ebay able to charge final value fees on the sales tax they collect, and ...
@jametod-518
Basically, BECAUSE THEY CAN. Actually, PayPal charged a fee to "accept the money" before Adyen (managed payments), but it was at a much lower rate.
Historically speaking, as with any unsavory new policy, eBay sellers have 'sucked it up' and will continue to sell so long as they are making money.

Oh My EYES !!! Unfortunately, I have now seen your ulterior motive for this post . . . . . .
Yeah, I guess you haven't been paying attention to eBay's fee schedule.
ALL eBay sellers are charged Final Value Fees.
I think all of your, um, sold "items" are in the standard 13.25% Final Value Fee percentage, plus 40 cents per order.

Good (fake) news!
Here at eBay we understand you are upset that fees are charged on Sales Tax. Effective tomorrow we will no longer apply fees to Sales Tax, we will adjust the regular FVF from 13.25% to 15% effective tomorrow.

Very little change in fees for years. Nothing that I would consider "skyrocketing".
Are you talking "fees" or "cost of selling"? 2 different animals.
When the shipping cost of items is close to the selling price of items it does seem like a big bite.

"...and supposedly send to the appropriate states??..."
Do you have some insider information from maybe a whistleblower....would you care to elaborate on this accusation? To jeopardize a billion dollar business to the scrutiny of a few pennies does not make a lot of sense to me.

But what's wrong with their items? It's a media market, and the titles are sold all over the place. However, media does have 15.5% FVF.

No underlying motives??? A $30. sold item has fees of about 20% - a $6. item has closer to 30% fees. Most of the items I sell are at 14.95% + $.40 per sale?.? ---just commenting

You're getting ripped off.
My fees have remained at 13.25%.
Maybe I get a lower rate for being a "cheerleader" on the ebay discussion boards?

Probably nothing is wrong with the OP's listed items. eBay allows them. Free Marketplace, First Amendment, and all that (as long as we have it . . . . . .)
So -- I'm either a terrible prude OR my response might actually help OP get some sales.
I think a lot of sellers could use that kind of help but their listings could be, comparatively, very boring.
Oh. BTW, I double checked: "Media" including books, magazines, movies and TV ("except Movie NFTs") carry a FVF percentage of 14.95%. The per-order fee also applies to that category (30 cents per-order when total sale amount is $10.00 and less or 40 cents per-order when total sale amount is $10.01 and more).

My "costs of selling" run between 25 and 30%
As with yours, the lower priced items have a higher "cost of selling" than do the higher priced items.
My "fees" are not 25-30%
Carrots and turnips.

I consider your estimate to be low🤣

Have you ever thought about selling a group of two books or more or maybe free shipping with the added shipping built in the sale...for sale. I know this doesn't affect anything related to the sales tax but selling more might be less of a pain of sales tax collected which we all cry about.
'Repeat buyers' is usually a good business plan...relating to selling same items in the same category.
The key is selling more and not looking at fees...which we all cry about.
Because of the category you probably can get books cheap at shops like Goodwill and such and group them together and sell them. Think outside the box and how can I increase my sales.
We all hate paying for anything these days...
Maybe throw a post card or greeting card related to your category with the books for sale.
Or sell them as well...you probably have a 'repeat buyers' list unlike these other sellers on eBay who sell buttons and toasters in their store and don't stick to one category or subject matter...stick to one specific subject category and increase the sales.
Rather than ranting on like 'others' here I try to improve WHAT you can do to increase profits.
Good luck.
