ebay gone bad. Time to rethink.

Agreed; ebay, has gone bad, but also ebayers.

After 18 years great transactions on ebay, due to recent events, I now have little confidence in the platform.

Sold a guitar, then the buyer said his parents wouldn't let him pay; ebay did nothing. Unable to contact customer service.

Bought and paid for a guitar, and never heard a thing from seller, despite multiple messages. Unable to contact ebay to help reach out to seller. Finally, just received refund.

Sold a guitar, clearly described and pictured, and stating no refunds. Buyer abuses ebay  "not as described" policy to seek ebay return. With no grounds for the "not as described claim, and no opportunity to voice my case, ebay sides with buyer for return.

It appears ebay is now trying to compete with Amazon at the expense of it's sellers, and not taking into account this is quite a different marketplace.

You've been here long enough to know that in a dispute, Ebay will always side with the buyer.

Well...

1) If the kid was too young to shop here, the kid was too young to shop here. Hope you opened a UID on the account.

2) Sorry you picked a scrub seller, but glad you got your refund.

3) Don't allow eBay to side with the buyer... be proactive. Approve the return and get your guitar back. I find that if something sells once, it will again.

Sorry you've had a bad run... hang in there!

None of your recent events is anything new - you've just been lucky if you have not experienced any of them before.   eBay has never had much in the way of customer service  - nor have they gotten involved in not as described return requests.  You can state no returns or no refunds, but you can't enforce it if the buyer claims not as described.   If you have been here 18 years that shouldn't be news to you.

Amazon and eBay may be different marketplaces, but they play by the same rules as any online retailer when it comes to returns.

ebay did nothing

eBay cannot force a buyer to pay for an item.

What would you expect eBay to do?

Bought and paid for a guitar, and never heard a thing from seller.

Unable to contact ebay to help reach out to seller.

eBay cannot force a seller to ship an item.

What would you expect eBay to do?

Sold a guitar, clearly described and pictured, and stating no refunds. Buyer abuses ebay  "not as described" policy to seek ebay return.

Imagine the same thing happened with you an another buyer, except that in the second case you did ship a guitar that did not match the description.

How would expect eBay to tell the difference between the two situations and correctly resolve each?

Unfortunately eBay cannot watch every seller ship every item, and cannot watch every buyer open every item. That is a fundamental drawback to e-commerce.
