Did you mean:

early canceling fees.

Just recently I had a listing that a customer identified that there was an error in it. I had a bid on it already. I felt I needed to protect my customers and correct the listing. So I canceled the bid and fixed the error and relisted the item. Ebay charged me $40 for doing that! I like to take care of my customers but when it costs me that much I guess I should not have bothered. The bidder that I canceled the bid on was the final buyer.

Re: early canceling fees.

Did you cancel the bid and also end the listing.

That $40 sounds like ebay thought you might have taken the transaction off of ebay so they are charging you their fee as if it was sold.

Re: early canceling fees.

You can simply revise the listing without ending it to correct it and having to relist.

When you cancelled a listing with a bid on it, it appears that you are doing so to take the transaction off Ebay, so you were charged a final value fee because of that.

Sorry.

Re: early canceling fees.

You can not revise the item description once you have received a bid for it. However, you can still "Add to Description" to correct your decription.

Re: early canceling fees.

OP - I'd call Ebay tomorrow and have them not only look at the email you received from a perspective buyer telling you of the misinformation - but also show them that the item was indeed relisted with the corrected information and sold on the platform to the highest bidder from the previous auction.

It's tough when you can't revise a listing description or title if you do come across something that needs to be changed after a bid has been made. If this happens again - I would email any bidders with the concern as they might want to retract their bids and I would then add a note to the description which is allowed through the dropdown next to your listing in seller hub.

Re: early canceling fees.

Unless it is the last 12 hours of the listing, I think..unless that has changed. Not sure if that makes any difference here though.

Revise is add to description.

Re: early canceling fees.

The problem with "Add to Description" is ebay sticks it at the very end of the description.  When I have to do this, I use big red font and hope buyers read that far.

Re: early canceling fees.

$40?  I don't see any recent items that would have had a fvf of $40........  do you mean they refunded $40?

.

Even if a seller could revise a listing that already has a bid if the listing error is significant it is not a good idea.

Adding to the description is also not a good idea.

Potential bidders who saw the listing before the revision/addition may not look back at it before bidding.  While it would be nice if all bidders checked back to make sure there were no changes to the listing before sniping, it's not always going to happen.  To avoid possible misunderstandings it is better to end the listing and relist with corrected information.

Re: early canceling fees.

Revise does not mean just to add to the description. When a seller revises an item - they can change the title - item specifics - price and shipping options. Once a bid is received a seller may only add additional information to the description - that does not change a mistake made in the item specifics or title and hopefully the seller notifies the bidders so that they may retract their bid.

Re: early canceling fees.

eBay's policy is that if you cancel an auction that has received bids, you are charged the same final value fee as if you had sold to the high bidder. The purpose of this penalty is to encourage sellers to be more careful about avoiding errors in their listings; in this case, it seems to have had the desired impact.

Last time I checked, the policy stated that the first such cancellation per calendar year would be exempted from the penalty. So, either the policy has changed or you already canceled an auction within the past 2 weeks. Or as noted in one of the other posts, they charged it because they thought you had arranged an of-eBay transaction -- but generally sellers are specifically notified when that happens.

In this case.  Obviously other things may be changed through a revision, that are not germaine to this issue, provided there has not been a bid and providing there is more than twelve hours left in the listing as the lack of time (an important point) precludes that.
