I am a novice to selling and 5 of my auctions ended at $0.99. eBay charged me $0.97! With the other fees and taxes, I had to pay $0.56 to sell my item! With $1 parking, I was down $1.56.
eBay charged me a fee for USPS shipping! I put the actual cost ($8.55 for padded envelope) and eBay is charging me $0.87 to mail it! This is ridiculous.
So, a $5 sale, I ended up with $2.90; for a $14.50 sale, I ended up with $11.18. Check it out for yourself! Look closely at the eBay invoice - and also take into account the paypal fees and cost for shipping.
This is usury and Congress should review and close down eBay.

You had no idea that the fees would be so bad?
Fees are fully explained in more than one place on eBay.
The information was available to you before you began selling.

Buyer pays the tax not you. $2.90 + $1.04 = $3.94 for your $5 win. You may want to go back and keep an eye out on what your are selling your items for and the cost to sell it as you seem confused.
Remember buyers pay total price. Your example the item sold for $13.55.

Wait, you charged almost $9 shipping for .99 cent items that could be mailed 1st class..? You do realize the % fee applies to the total cost including shipping and sales tax, right?

Thanks for the input! I now know who NOT to buy from!
Again, I'm just downsizing... I'm not a company. Per eBay's recommendation, I started my first auctions for $0.99 - which sold for these prices - and I honored these auctions. I had no idea that I would be charged for actual shipping costs and that these auctions would cost me money.
God Bless All!

You are charged final value fees on the total buyer's payment. I don't know what you mean by being charged for the actual shipping costs. Yes, it's easy to go in the hole if you don't take into account all the fees involved.

I just learned that eBay says that the selling fee in most cases is %12.55 -- which is too much, and gets even higher if one wants to really sell their item by ads. But applies is to the after tax amount and deducts all of that from the payout! What an appetite for sucking money from the sellers. eBay would easily lose to a fair competitor that charges a fair amount of fee, as people would simply migrate.

Can we lock this thread from May

I have been on eBay since 1999. Originally, I just used it to buy little things I've been looking for, but couldn't find. Over time, I found things laying around home that I thought I'd like to sell and figured I'd make a few bucks. No more. I have some auctions running and I think I may well just end them early and bail on eBay altogether. Quite honestly, I think they're THIEVES.
Charging 13% for an ONLINE auction where they have no responsibility to really deal with either side aside from sending a bill and sending money is a bit much, but CHARGING A COMMISSION ON SALES TAX????
That's just stealing. The last straw was I just completed an auction (I do not ship internationally), and I am being assessed a fee because the buyers registered address in in a foreign country. ABSURD. I am shipping it a couple states away in the US. I don't control where a buyer comes from, only where I will ship.
Fed up with this bullsh*t and I would honestly rather throw my excess stuff out than sell it on eBay and give these crooks another cent.

I will go for that.
I am NEVER in favor of using power to force anyone to do anything. Nobody is forced to use eBay and if you don't like it (I am not liking it much these days and might just leave), don't use it.
Congress should not get involved with anything other than defending the people and ensuring that our rights are not being infringed upon. Beyond that, THEY should close the shop
