eBay removed my video game listing for price gouging

This is a rare video game that is no longer made. I had it as $100 which is the going price on ebay, there are lots of other sellers selling it for $130+

. We are aware that this is a video game, but it is obvious that you are taking advantage of the current situation. If you choose to relist this item, please be reasonable with your price. If you do not follow this policy in the future, this may result in the removal of your listings and the suspension of your account.

eBay price gouging policy states: "Items that are considered essential must be offered at a reasonable price"

how is a video game an essential item? Am I no longer allowed to sell rare video games and risk my account being banned for price gouging? My price was fair, and it was the same price as before the virus.

eBay is getting a little ridiculous

Yep, now we have to worry about buyers abusing the report feature, claiming everything is being price gouged. The OP's post is proof the new feature is already being abused.

Notice ebay told them quote, "It is obvious you are clearly taking advantage of the situation." Yet, we're talking about a video game here, not toilet paper and face masks.

I think what's most obvious is that ebay is making garbage assumptions about their sellers, and with no merit.

Yes, but, remember the buyer is 'right'.

Yet another gross example of ebay trifling. The response given by the  ebay rep was...rep-rehensible. Outrageous even. This is a free market system in the U.S. and a seller can ask any price he wishes for this non-essential item - PERIOD!

GENERAL REPLY:
I have to wonder if a work at home eBay employee who also sells collectable games decided to pull the competition down.

@Anonymous

You have said the OP is price gouging, so why don't you personally pull all the other listings for the same game in the same condition?

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=doom+switch&_sacat=0&LH_ItemCondition=100

Have at it big boy, either get them pulled or admit that video games aren't essential items and some one made a mistake.

OK, got it. The OP has not returned to mention what the game was and the normal retail price of the item is to determine the situation. I would think video games are a hot seller with stay at home families right now. Gouging would be bad for parents trying to purchase items for their kids to keep them sane at this time.

He has said it's Doom Switch, new sealed in the original package. people can buy it used for about half the price he was asking and they can get a general download on it for $59. It's no longer in physical production

Re: eBay removed my video game listing for price gouging

OK guys, call me crazy but I'm trying to figure out why this specific listing was pulled.

I'm going to put aside the fact that a video game was pulled for price gouging (really??) because we all know there are free games out there and video games are not an essential item.

Instead I'm going to focus on the fact that this is a discontinued and collectible game.

trinton@ebay said this:

"I can confirm that collectible items, such as video games that are no longer in production, could reasonably be sold with a high markup from the initial listing price due to the nature of the product. Listing a video game that is still in production at a price that is significantly higher than retail price, but may simply be experiencing high demand and low supply due to recent events, would be seen as an attempt to profit from the suffering and hardship of others, and be actioned appropriately as price gouging."

And this:

"I can encourage you to review the communication you received from eBay and suggest that you research the item in question further. Based on what has been shared here, I believe there has been a misunderstanding regarding the rarity of the item or there may have been errors made with the item details provided to us."

Here's what I'm extrapolating from that: I think this removal is yet another victim of the ol' product catalog issues we sellers have seen.

@usgamecollector , is it possible the UPC or MPN on that game is shared with other versions of the game currently in production? Is it possible your listing had the wrong UPC or MPN because you did a sell similar and forgot to change it - or that you typed the wrong number?

trinton@ebay's post suggests that this listing was pulled because of the item specifics on the listing making eBay think the game was currently in production. He also says that discontinued games are allowed to be sold with a markup.

Again - I disagree with video games being caught up in price gouging take downs, so I'm instead focusing on the fact that this is a discontinued game that is allowed to be sold at a markup according to eBay. Why would a discontinued game not subject to price gouging rules be taken down with price gouging cited as the reason? I think this has to do with the item specifics and the product-based search or the product catalog.

usgamecollector, can you provide any more details that might help us figure this out? If we can find the issue then maybe it can be corrected so you can relist the item without fear of another removal. Maybe that's pie in the sky thinking, but I'm going with it.

Re: eBay removed my video game listing for price gouging

I am in agreement with you, its possible it was issues with algorithms associated with the catalog that set off red flags for ebay. Either that, or abuse by a buyer who flagged the listing for price gouging.

Either way, ebay doesn't know what games are in production and which aren't. If they did, they wouldn't have thousands of listings for counterfeit copies of Nintendo 64 games for sale everywhere, all listed as brand new, which is impossible to begin with.

ebay apparently thinks these games are still in production, they are not, nor have they been in a very long time. The last game to officially release on the N64 was Tony Hawks pro skater 3, and that was in August of 2002. Any new sealed copies left are few and far between.

Now if i could get a Gilvader dragon for a low price or a first edition Amaterasu plush.  I suppose antiques and rare art also have to be sold for less during the outbreak?

@gracieallen01Yes I did. It is because of unscrupulous Ebay sellers. Did you hear about the seller from Tenn that hoarded all the PPE from every store for in a 3 state radius to scam people in a crises ?

Did you also hear the ending to that situation? When some online platforms did the correct thing and banned the reselling of ESSENTIAL items during a crisis situation that seller DONATED all the items he had!

I can think of several platforms he could have moved them to and still be able to sell them yet he didn’t. He donated them.

A good ending I to a bad situation.

I mentioned it because YOU are taking things out of context. Scamming is the worse thing Ebay needs right now. Someone dying before the crises has NOTHING to do with the situation right now.

it was mentioned because trinton said theyve pulled listings in the past that were profiting because a famous person died

@wastingtime101

Even IF this was a currently available game, what right has ebay to deem it an "essential" item under price gouging rules?

Or even to state what price is or is not 'reasonable' in their eyes?

But not because the gouger had a choice. He was forced to donate them when the AG took an interest. He still faces possible repercussions re fines/jail time etc.

So they ARE attempting to engage in price fixing then?

Interesting.

I guess you overlooked the multiple statements my post where I said I don't agree with eBay's actions, so I really can't answer your questions.
