Hi, I want to determine shipping cost before I invest in inventory.... sorry for the lack of knowledge 😞
just did some random calculation on ebay shipping calculator for : A package sized 11x8x4 weighing 3 lbs from LA to DENVER... it says: $ 9.26 to ship via USPS priority mail, $ 9.06 to ship via parcel select ground. Just wondering to know if this is correct. I don't know if we can sent parcels via priority mail.. i think it is for envelops?
Also how is it possible to pay $9 to ship an item worth $18 at most? People are selling similar products at $14?? Am I doing it wrong? Please help.

I think OP means parcel select ground via USPS.
Parcel Select Ground is a USPS mail class that offers ground delivery service at very low rates for large or heavy packages. When using this mail class, shipmentscan weigh up to 70lbs. and delivery ranges from 2–8 days. Rates are based on distance, weight and mailpiece dimensions.

People regularly buy things that have high shipping costs relative to item cost. Either they like the convenience of having something delivered to their door, or whatever it is that they want is not available in their immediate vicinity. We buy things all the time that are not available in our town in order to save ourselves a minimum hour and a half round trip to a bigger city.
Shipping is something that's very confusing sometimes. Most things can be sent by Priority Mail. The box size you are describing can go by Priority just fine.

I don't know where you got that quote from, but it's obsolete. The difference between Parcel Select Ground and Priority Mail is less than a dollar for any combination of weight and zone. The only time that Priority would cost significantly more is for packages that are over 1 cubic foot (1728 cubic inches) and going to Zones 5 - 9, because they are subjected to a "dimensional weight."

Priority Mail is for packages, too.

We spent the day with the Twin Terrors and their rocket scientist parents. My husband and I were installing a long curtain rod for them (they are unable to perform that task because it involves physical tools and hands) and the curtains, rod, rings and hooks were from Ikea.
After much explanation of how to actually attach the curtains to the rod, they realized they didn't buy enough rings/hooks. My son-in-law had a fit when the shipping from Ikea was $9, for such a lightweight package.
Ikea is a 50-60 minute one-way drive for us and them, in good traffic (which never occurs around here). I personally would pay the $9 but oh no, it should be free, he said.
Then I said smh it's a drapery hook - go to almost any store and get one and we can finish this right now. He ordered from Amazon Prime instead. This is what we're up against as sellers.
OP, as moo said, your item will ship by Priority Mail. Yes, it's expensive and even more so if you plug in a NYC zip code. It's usually not worth the savings to use Parcel Select because it will lengthen the delivery time (usually).
Are the other sellers of this item using Free Shipping? Many sellers do that before realizing that those shipping costs will really add up.
Also, just as an aside, are there a lot of listings for this inventory you're considering? Meaning, lots of competition? You may want to rethink that; if I remember your post correctly you said you will be buying this inventory. Low selling price + heavy weight is usually not a good investment.

11x8x4 is a hair over .2 cubic feet. If you over estimated that box size slightly it might qualify for .2 cubic at pirateship.com and will the cheapest way to ship that box.
For cubic you can round down the nearest 1/4 inch.
You can save as much as a few dollars per shipment. You can ship up to 20lbs at the same cubic rate as 2 lbs just needs to be same size box. Smaller the better.
LxWXH then ÷ 1728 .1 .2 .3 .4 .5 cubic are the tiers. If its .201 its .3 rate. Your box is .203 so it's just barely over .2 so if you over estimated the size it might ship at .2

Also shipping from CA to CO is a lot cheaper then shipping from CA to NY.

Shipping is based on weight, dimensions and distance.
Not of the value of the contents.
The rate covers the carrier's cost plus a little for problems and profit.
Some things are not meant for mail order.
And online shopping is just mail order in a clever plastic costume.
If it is heavy or bulky but low value, don't sell it online.
If it is heavy or bulky and high value, you may have a profitable business.

To get an idea, use this instead of eBay's page until you get a grip on this:
Yes, as suggested there are even less expensive options out there, but this will give you some basic information.

One more thing, if that box fits in this free USPS envelope
https://store.usps.com/store/product/shipping-supplies/priority-mail-tyvek-envelope---ep14-P_EP_14
Then it will ship at .2 cubic rate if you use the envelope

@Anonymous
If they are fragile items in retail boxes, it's unlikely that they would survive shipping without being put into another bigger box with more padding or packing peanuts. That will increase the shipping cost. Hard to say without seeing the boxes or knowing what the items are. The last thing you want is for buyers to receive broken items.
