Hello all. I’m looking for some friendly advice from some experienced sellers.
I’ve been an on and off again eBay user for a few years now. Recently I’ve been sourcing some products from clearance sections of our local department stores & thrift stores.
I’ve seen some videos on YouTube and read claims on these boards about the proper way to list items and I’m running into confusion.
If you found a pair of Levi’s, new with tags at a thrift store, can you sell them “new with tags”.
If you found a pair of shoes at a TJ Max, can you sell them as “new without box”
I’ve heard the stories of VERO and the gray areas involved. I’ve been looking for a YouTube video that could help explain it all better. Are there certain brands we just shouldn’t sell, even if you went into the mall and got them new on sale?
Are you better off just listing everything “preowned” even if they are brand new with tags but came from a thrift store?
Any advice, videos, or articles would be much appreciated as I’d love to take selling on eBay from an on/off hobby to the next step up.
Thank you in advance!

Ebay's info on VERO:
https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/listing-and-marketing/verified-rights-owner-program.html
There is a list of participating companies, but the list is not all inclusive as some companies choose to not have their name listed, although they are participants.

If you found a pair of Levi’s, new with tags at a thrift store, can you sell them “new with tags”. Yes, if all the original tags are attached.
If you found a pair of shoes at a TJ Max, can you sell them as “new without box” Yes, if you are positive they are new, never worn.

Are there certain brands we just shouldn’t sell, even if you went into the mall and got them new on sale? If you have a brand you're not sure about, research and see if others are selling that product. Be sure to keep your receipts if product if from a department store. I've even seen some sellers post pictures of the receipt showing proof of purchase for authenticity (not that it would make any difference if a buyer wanted to file that it was a fake).
Are you better off just listing everything “preowned” even if they are brand new with tags but came from a thrift store? If they are new from the store with original tags, you can sell as new. If you're not sure, then I would sell as pre-owned, but like new.
Any advice, videos, or articles would be much appreciated as I’d love to take selling on eBay from an on/off hobby to the next step up. Start slow with smaller items. Don't jump in with high value items right away. Get a good feels for everything first. Once you are feeling more comfortable with things, take it up a notch or two. eBay and PayPal will limit you at first until you have proven yourself to be a reputable seller.
Just my two cents 🙂
Thank you in advance!

Don't see if others are selling the product as that means nothing. Many a listing has been pulled, sometimes with sanctions for the seller, because it was not an Ebay legal item to sell~even though there were many other listings for the same item~and there are many threads on this to prove it. Others selling the same item only means that Ebay has not got around to pulling those items yet. The analogy commonly used is that of cars speeding. Everyone can be speeding, but you are the one that gets pulled over. If you are listing something that is not Ebay legal, someone might report your listing, if the bots don't catch it, and you can put your selling privileges in jeopardy. Don't relist anything that has been pulled.
Ebay has a prohibited items list that can be checked before listing.
https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/prohibited-restricted-items?id=4207
If something is not straight from the store those tags are from, consider listing as pre owned.

If you purchase a New with tag item from the thrift, a store, a garage sale or a rummage sale - you can list the item as new with tags. Just make sure to measure and make sure the size of the garment is the size stated on the tag. A couple of times I've picked up slacks that were mismarked as far as size - so just double check.

Some would say if you didn't buy them first from the originating store, that they should be listed as pre owned; some might choose to not do that. But you might want to consider what you choose to sell~there are many sellers of clothing and shoes, and thus many consider that to be an over saturated category. Your call, of course, and I wish you much success whatever you choose to do.

I agree. I'm not sure how a buyer or Vero would even know that a NWT item was or wasn't purchased from an authorized retail store if that were to be an issue. Unless the seller is stating in the listing where the acquired their stock from.
But I think some further clarification would be good from those that know more than I do.

Yes, it has happened.
A long time ago, I ended up sending an email to the CEO of eBay (because reporting the listing had not worked). I got a response from someone in the CEO's office, which included the chain of email messages that started when the CEO forwarded the email to someone to get the horrific listing removed. And it was removed, very quickly, after the email was received and forwarded.
We didn't have the same level of support from eBay community employees then, that we do now. I had contacts for a number of the eBay employees in the community, but they were not able to get the listing removed.

Hi @mam98031 & @donnydenim, New with tags is defined as "A brand-new, unused, and unworn item (including handmade items) in the original packaging (such as the original box or bag) and/or with the original tags attached." This refers to the condition of the item, and would be appropriate even if it was purchased from a thrift store as long as the product matches the previously provided definition. Definitely perform your due diligence to ensure what you are selling is the correct item represented by the tags and that there are no signs of previous use, damage, cleaning, etc.
If you cannot be certain that the item is truly new with the original tags, then it is best to list it as Pre-owned and avoid any potential issues. You can read more about this topic here.

Thank you Trinton for the FAST response and the clarification. I find it very helpful as I'm sure others will.
