As a seller I had 2 damage claims in 2019, both were with UPS. Both situations were very bad experiences--dealing with UPS to resolve the claims. I thought since a year+ had passed, I would try UPS again since they were a little lower in price. Needless to say they damaged a vintage lighting fixture. So now I am finding (again) they are nearly impossible to work with on claims. Their web site is never functioning properly, and calling is about as bad--as far as actually getting anything done.
I wonder if anyone else has gone thru this ? It's hard to imagine there wouldn't be anyone else....
If you're out there, ...any advice ?

Most carriers will pay out on lost items, but damage claims are hard because the carriers will usually say insufficient packing.

I also sell vintage items & am a fanatic about packing, This is what UPS told me many years ago: Breakable items should be wrapped with 3 layers of bubble wrap, & you should not be able to feel any edges of the item. The package should be able to withstand dropping from 6 feet tall~~I haven't actually tried that one for obvious reasons. Use plenty of packing peanuts. There should be at least 3" of space all around the item. To be honest buyers complain a lot about my shipping charges, but I can't remember ever have a damaged item. Most of the items I sell are breakable, but I would rather lose a sale than worry about breakage & have to deal with a claim. Hope this helps.

This is NOT a comment on your packing job. Maybe somethings should be for PU only or consider using of The UPS stores to pack and ship if you want to use that service.

Please don't think I was criticizing your packing. I have no idea how the item was packed nor do I know what the item was. There are times that no matter how well you pack there will be damage. I was simply telling you what UPS told me. Do with it what you will. I only use UPS & will do anything not to have a claim. Again, I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

All I know from my experience is that big corporations almost never get "better" over time, only worse.
Case in point.

I would use the UPS packing service, but with what they charge, very few potential buyers would be willing to pay the extra expense.
I have been on ebay for over 17 years, and have never experienced a carrier like UPS--and I never will again since I will never use them again. I am going back to FEDEX, which still has somewhat a bit of sanity left.

Believe me, I will Never use UPS again. I'm going back to FEDEX where I never had these PROBLEMS.

I've been to all these places sort facilities. I've seen the crushed boxes coming down the belt. And then when they hit the "funnel", it gets crushed even more. And the loaders just don't give a F. You're talking about the bottom of the barrel labor wise.

I use UPS for all my breakables and use "only them " for items over 100.00. 35 years selling and had only 15 broken items with them and 10 of them they send me a check and "a sorry" for damaged item. The other 5 claims were quick and simple and paid out in less than 30 days. Both FedEx and USPS turn down any claim right away and make you jump through hoops to file.

You wrote just exactly what I was thinking. I packed the vintage glassware very securely, yet it got shattered. I have been on ebay for over 17 yrs, and sell such items I mentioned...UPS has to be the worst. And to top that off, trying to file a damage claim is H#LL !
