buyer wants to cancel after receiving an email with a better price from another seller

The received a better price right before the end of my auction; undercut my price by $30; is this even "legal" on eBay?

Another seller could have sent an offer on a watched item..........which is legal........

Fwiw, that's probably eBay on their own sending out those notifications. Seems as soon as anyone searches for an item if they don't buy right away then it's assumed the issue is price, so they'll get spammed with "found lower price" emails.

Hi there,

If a buyer is requesting for you to cancel the transaction then on the grounds that they found the same item cheaper from another seller you have a few options that you can do which are:

  • You can tell the buyer no, I won't be canceling the transaction however you risk getting negative feedback or the buyer getting **bleep** and making some false claim and you lose the money and then also getting negative feedback. eBay and PayPal are known to side with the buyer however if the buyer says in any message to you saying that they want the transaction cancelled because they found it cheaper elsewhere, if you refuse to cancel the sale and they leave any type of negative feedback or make up some claim eBay and PayPal may automatically side with you because when they clicked on buy it now they agreed to pay for the item as you did nothing wrong.
  • You can do a price match, I probably would recommend doing this because you're selling the item plus you might get feedback that's hopefully positive. You can ask the buyer where did they find it by providing a link or giving and item number and if you can verify its exact same item you can price match it and I probably think that will make the buyer very happy.
  • If the buyer is just asking for you to cancel the transaction, you can go ahead and cancel the transaction but I do want to say this from experience, while eBay won't charge you a fee because nothing was sold on the other hand PayPal is still going to charge you a processing fee. I think the price match is maybe the best choice.

Thanks,

If you cancel you will get your ebay fees back, For now you lose the .30 Paypal  transaction fee only
Starting in May any refunds given via Paypal you will NOT get your fees back per the policy update we just received  from them.

@cashmere_and_more   That Buyer is cheap so its probably better that you are not going to sell to them.  Message them and advise them that in order to cancel their bids on the Auction they will need to message you and ask.  Then cancel their bids ... you can add the to your blocked list if you want.

Has the buyer paid?  If not, there will be no PayPal fee.

The title of this thread is "buyer wants to cancel after receiving an email with a better price from another seller," so I think it's a fair conclusion that the buyer has already messaged the OP.

It's the transaction the buyer wants cancelled, not their bids

"That buyer is cheap . . . ?" You're saying, as a consumer, you wouldn't choose a price that is $30 lower on an item? Trying to save $30 makes the buyer "cheap?"

It's most likely the buyer had 2 of the same item on their watch list and the second seller used the new "send watchers an offer" function.

Of course, there is also the possible scenario that there was no offer for a $30 lower price.  The bidder/buyer is fishing for a reduced price - price comparison discount or some such thing.

Regardless of Ebay "legality", buyer asks to cancel so just cancel as per buyer request and make sure Ebay correctly cancels without a ding on your "dashboard" as buyer requests to cancel should not cause a ding.  Anytime a buyer requests to cancel just do it and move on.

With the price match thing I'd also report the 'buyer' for something not included in the listing.
