Would like to get some comments on eBay's latest fee increase. "Cases", valid or not generate fee

Recently eBay has added extra fees if you have X number of cases posted against your account.  It doesn't seem to matter if these are valid cases or not.  Example---USPS loses a package!  Customer reports a case.

Example---Customer says package didn't arrive even though sent out on normal schedule===sent a replacement!  Both arrived, however still have a "case".  Example---customer says missing part and files a "case".  Later finds the part in the box.   All these and other similar result in cases being filed and eBay increasing fees.  How many others are running into this same situation????

I haven't experienced that, however... if an item shows it was delivered and the buyer says they didn't get it.... all that matters really is that it shows it was delivered, and that you shipped it to the address provided by the buyer...

I've had people file cases against me for "item not received" that showed it was delivered days prior to the case...

Any time that has happened I have always just called eBay (or had them call me) and they will close the case in your favor right there on the phone.

That is one of the very few perks sellers get for protection, but always do that if you get a case filed and it says delivered.

This isn't exactly recent, it's been happening for a few years now.

That said, the entire Service Metrics system is ABSOLUTELY unfair.

Half of it for the reason you say, SNAD metrics are based on CASES being opened, and not on DECIDED cases!

The other parts that are unfair:

- Categories are not treated equally. The entire eBay Motors SITE is considered 1 big category! This means items with a high failure rate (such as spark plugs, ignition coils, etc) are being compared for returns to items such a body parts which DO NOT have a failure rate! It's impossible to sell certain categories without receiving the penalty!

- Protections are not always granted when promised. INR's from Feb 10-24th were supposed to be protected, and we have 16 that were NOT even though they fit the eligibility.

- INR's are making sellers responsible for carrier problems. If your local PO loses items? It's your fault.

- There's nothing sellers could really do to fight INR's, as it is 100% out of their hands. What could you possibly due these days to reduce them? USPS, FedEx, and UPS all have had high rates of delayed/lost items lately.

- These systems are not transparent at all. Supposedly only "5% of sellers are effected by these at any given time", but speaking to other sellers, this seems to be FAR from the truth!

- The penalties could literally drive stores out of business. 5% FVF off of your margin is often profits for many product lines. And the shipping penalty from INR's literally cuts your sales in half by more than 50% (We were IMPROPERLY targeted with this penalty a month ago according to eBay - we weren't eligible for the penalty since we had < 1% defect rate, but the shipping penalty STILL happened to us - so we have evidence of how much it hurts sales!)

- These penalties do nothing for buyers. All they do is hurt sellers. It doesn't improve the buyer experience. It makes things more UNFAIR rather than fair. It causes sellers to potentially raise their prices if FVF goes up. There's absolutely nothing "constructive" about these penalties.

- There's no way to fight these penalties. You have proof the cases weren't your fault? Too bad. INR's being unfairly held against you? "Sorry, CS can't adjust them, I wish we could!".

I'm sorry this happened to you.  I know on a personal level how upsetting situations like this can be.

But I am glad you got some compassionate feedback here to soften the blow.

It seems to me that eBay is not interested why you are attracting cases, they are only interested that you are attracting cases.

I suspect eBay's position is that it would be too expensive for them to investigate every case and assign "blame".

So instead, they put the burden on you to figure out how to stop attracting these cases, and if you can't then you will probably leave.

In other words, "get rid of the sellers who attract cases, and the cases will go away".

What am I missing? Although I don't agree with the way eBay handles many things including the service metrics, the op seems to be saying that they are paying the extra 5% because of inr cases.  That can happen with too many snad cases and I totally understand your anger over that but the penalty for very high inr metrics are:

If you are evaluated as “very high” in “Item not received” in a specific category, you may be subject to having time automatically added to your delivery estimates for the shipping categories where the “very high” evaluation applies.

So how would a seller have higher fees because  of inr's?

You obviously aren't responding to your cases and closing them before ebay has to step in.

@mandy_4281

The point is, it doesn't matter if you respond or not, if the buyer closes the case, it was filed in error and should be for another seller,  or if it is found in your favor and ebay closes the case.  This metric counts them all simply because the were opened.  For SNAD issues, the seller gets fvf punnishment camp which amounts to about a 50% fee increase.

For example, if your fee rate was 10%, you have a additional 5% punishment rate added.

They don't take into account how the case turns out.....only that it was "opened".

I suspect that the system is working exactly as eBay intended, it is an income stream for ebay

Well, that is cretinous and immoral.  Just like something eBay would do.

With new policies like this it is going to be funny to watch their net income, total assets, and equity plummet to record-breaking depths.

If I were looking to judge how well eBay is doing as a company, I would be more focused on GMV the dollar amount of merchandise that buyers are buying here.

2015 - $81.3 billion

2016 - $83.5 billion

2017 - $88.4 billion

2018 - $88.8 billion

2019 - $85.5 billion

2020 - $100.0 billion

What's your estimate for GMV plummeting to record breaking depths?

For example, in what year do you estimate GMV will drop below $75 billion?

Re: Would like to get some comments on eBay's latest fee increase. "Cases", valid or no

I have 2 service metrics counted against me. Both, the buyer opened item not as described cases.

1- The next day after the last day the buyer had to return the item, they messaged me and said they would not return it if I gave them a discount. I called ebay and the case was closed in my favor b/c it was past the return date and the buyer tried to extort me. They would not remove the service metrics defect.

2- The buyer admitted in ebay messages that they chose the wrong reason and that they tried to contact ebay to have it changed but had no success. Ebay then sent them a free return shipping label addressed to a totally different person than myself, was even in a different state. Ebay DID reimburse me for their mistake, but would not remove the service metrics defect.

doesn't matter if case was closed in your favor. Even if the buyer changes their mind it still counts against you.
