That's even gotten to be a coin toss these days... fast food or supermarket kids just stare at you half the time.

Re: Why is there buyer feedback?

Well since ebay does not allow sellers to leave honest neutral or negative feedback, buyer feedback is not very useful.  If its a negative experience and the seller honestly explains that, ebay has a convenient policy that says they will remove the feedback as a seller can only leave a positive feedback, but the honest neutral/negative comments will contradict the positive rating (the only rating a seller can leave), so this ensures no honest neutral/negative feedback will ever be left for buyers.

Seller feedback is the only feedback worth any perusal.

Re: Why is there buyer feedback?

I let Ebay generate whatever automatic feedback it chooses for buyers. Some buyers are needy and need validation from strangers.

You're absolutely right.

Sometimes i'm the one to say thank you to them and I get a blank stare in return.

You would think that most stores would make it policy for employees to say "thank you" to customers ... but apparently not.

You can be curt like that if that is your style of talking to people.  But it would likely work out better to thank them for the business and welcome them to return.

While I've been pushing for Ebay to just stop buyer feedback all together.  Most if not all similar sites stopped it a long time ago.  But while it is still here, it makes a buyer feel good when you say something nice.  Repeat buyers are very good for business.  Keep that in mind.

Re: Why is there buyer feedback?

I never quite understood the reluctance of some sellers to provide feedback for customers; even if the type of feedback is "limited" by eBay.  From my 35 year career in sales and marketing, I regularly thanked my accounts for their business (card or note).  On eBay, I have followed the same practice. Either a note on the packing list or an enclosed note with their purchase.  My customers have a wide range of sellers to choose from. But many  remember who valued their business...and others who didn't. Leaving them feedback is a positive move [no pun intended].

For one reason:  to satisfy eBay's demand that you jump through a hoop to demonstrate that you hold buyers in high regard.

Personally, I do it because I want to feed the beast -- give it everything it demands, right down to the video on my seller page.    You are making eBay happy, and that will redound to your benefit.

If you agree, merely do what makes the most sense: set your feedback to be left automatically.

Then you no longer have to think about it.

Buyer will be happy or not care; you will not be bothered with constant reminders; and the eBay monster will be fed its data.

And in the middle of the night, while you are asleep, the eBay monster will see what you have done and give you a gold star.

Which in my opinion is very important, because selling here is ultimately about YOU.

Re: Why is there buyer feedback?

If you ran a B&M store would you complain about thanking your customers who came in and made a purchase? Of course not. This is basically the same thing.

I know this is a common statement in the Community, IDK why or how you figure it applies to leaving feedback.  Most buyers don't leave feedback anymore and more and more sellers are stopping it too.  Feedback for buyer's likely makes the buyer feel good, but it doesn't satisfy anything regarding an "Ebay's demand".  Feedback is a voluntary process and there is no Ebay requirement or punishment for sellers if they choose not to leave feedback.

Well not really.  Ebay is about the only site like this that still has feedback for buyers.  Most sites have done away with that a long long time ago.

Re: Why is there buyer feedback?

@bqbguitar

I'm curious why you'd even ask about feedback. You've been on ebay since 1998 with buying and selling going back probably as long and you have left over 2000 feedbacks for both buyers and sellers, including several from within the last month.

And although I didn't go through all 2001 feedbacks you left, those I skimmed are along the lines of the suggestions made in the replies you got.

You've never left a snarky or sarcastic feedback so why even ask? TBH, I'm just curious -- unless it's a way to get us to look at your listings.
