What I have had happen lately is someone who receives and item that is new and they don't like it, they say it is defective of damaged. They claim it smells musty or smokey. I have to pay for return shipping, I get it and it has absolutely no smell. I don't give them original shipping in the refund. I report them. eBay then refunds them without any money from me or repercussions on my account. They totally have lied and still get all their money back, and I am stuck with a new item to try and sell again. I know they can send it back to me, but all the lying and false claim are annoying.
And, unlike some who have answered, I would say sometimes arrived damaged are lies as well. I actually had someone open a return for that reason, I received the item back and it worked fine and had no damage. eBay is trying to be Amazon who accept all returns no questions asked, then fill warehouses with broken, or unused items. For us on eBay, we are the warehouses.

For a NAD claim (which you are stating it was, there's no way for you to deduct original shipping from the refund. Buyer gets full payment refunded.

I agree because of these spurious claims, the Seller really has no say. The protection for the Seller is really non existent, and he does all the work. And any recourse to Shipper's is basically useless.

What if the pictures show much damage, then what. Shippers will always try to avoid paying.

However if photo's do show extensive damage, then what, shippers will put you through the hoop, trying to avoid paying. Even worse if it's out of Country.

There has to be protection for the honest sellers, they do all the work.

Have you ever tried to make a shipping claim, especially if it's crossed the border. Your out of luck if the shipper cannot get a reply from the buyer.

For the most part most buyers are honest.

What if the buyer says he does not have the time to do that, especially if the item crosses the Border, say Canada to US

You are not answering the question asked.

Also protects the buyer from a shoddy packing job by the seller. I’ve numerous items here on eBay over the years and can’t believe how terrible it was packed.

Amen!

How do you take up a damage problem, with your shipper, when it is out of Country. The buyer can simply avoid any correspondence with your Shipper and your s..t out of luck. This happened to me. There is no protection for the Seller. No insurance claim, and E-Bay pays the Buyer, out of your money.

I offer free returns and get very few returns. Good item descriptions and good packaging are key.

Wait till you get conned on a return.
