Why do I have to give Ebay my SSN number Date of Birth And Bank ROUTING number? Are You CRAZY???
What's next, My dog's name, My mother's name, How about my address, age, weight. Do you want a photo too?
Well this is what I have for you!!! ZIP, NADA , ZERO and nothing from me ever again. Oh NO you tell me.
It's all safe. We would never give that info out! AND YOU WERE NEVER HACKED IN 2014 either? When that hack happened, I remember saying, I don't have to worry cause Ebay doesn't have my SSN# Date of birth or
address. And will never have it.
Sorry for the rant.
I'm mildly upset.
(Someone who used to be on Ebay every day)

You don't have to. Selling on eBay is voluntary.
The IRS requires your SS# for tax reasons, what you sell is reportable as income. The banking info is to make deposits into the account for the sales. If you're uncomfortable with the situation you can make a seperate account for them.

You only have to give that information if you want to sell here.
They were hacked but they didn't get any information they could use because of Ebay's safety.
Now, they don't need your whole SSN, just the last 4.

Sorry this is stressful for you. Yes, I must be crazy - I gave e-Bay all that info, just as I did Paypal years ago. We switched to MP last October and while others have reported issues, it has been fine for us.
IRS reporting is changing in 2021 and e-Bay needs your information for your bank to make your deposits into. We created a new, stand-alone checking at a separate bank thinking it would be an issue to co-mingle. We are seriously thinking about just opening one at the bank we usually use as honestly, it has not created the concerns or issues we originally thought it might.
Good luck as you work to discern what will work best for you!

As for the Routing number, that identifies your bank, not you. It's printed on every check you have ever written.

I understand you don't want to give the info. But I don't understand why you rant about being asked for it........you have to be an intelligent person to have listed on Ebay...... They need the routing number to send money to your bank.......they need the ss identification to fulfill the federal requirements of reporting income. Your date of birth is an obvious point of identification to try to prevent hackers from using your account....... They don't ask your mother's maiden name as every does every credit co with whom I have an account.........
It just isn't rocket science......

Agree. What regulation requires eBay to report “income”? How could eBay even know if I’m selling at a loss or profit? And how could only last four of SSN be used to report anything anyway? Can’t find anywhere where eBay actually identifies the “government regulation” it says requires DOB or any part of an SSN. eBay needs to be more forthright in why it asks for personal information.

@toyah18 this is a zombie post from last year.
However, starting on Jan 1, 2022, eBay and other marketplaces are required by IRS to issue a Form 1099-K for all sellers who receive $600 or more in sales. They're not reporting your profit as nobody knows what that might be. They are reporting the income you earned on eBay.

Why does a 10 month old post with a worn out subject start making rounds again?

To get paid.
Those sneaky **bleep**s at ebay put money into my bank account every day!

Your SSN (or another taxpayer ID number) is required because Congress passed a law requiring eBay to file informational forms with the IRS - and that is how the IRS identifies taxpayers.
What's next, My dog's name, My mother's name, How about my address, age, weight. Do you want a photo too?
No just the address. They'll get the rest of what they need when they look you up with the credit agencies.
Well this is what I have for you! ZIP, NADA , ZERO and nothing from me ever again.
You should probably take your listings down then, because if they sell you will not be able to get your money.
And will never have it.
That is one choice that is available to you.

So your okay with giving out your ssn for a job that more people will see in the screening process than will on eBay. It's really not that big of a deal at all and if you want to get paid then you have to do it. The odds of you getting hacked is extremely slim if at all. Most ID theft is done via credit cards and they don't need your social for that but that's a whole other thing. Just put your numbers in and get back to listing to make that money. Good luck! It's going to start picking up of the next 3-4 months so get to listing.
