Why cancel an order THIS way????

Buyer sent me an offer Monday, which I accepted.  She waited until tonight to pay ..... and then immediately filed a CHARGEBACK!  All without any personal communication.  And look at the reason -uh honey you don't recognize a transaction that YOU made an offer for?

Why not just ask me to cancel it?  Or isn't there a way for buyers to cancel a sale themselves, if it hasn't shipped yet?  The fact that both the payment and the card dispute happened within a few minutes of each other makes it seem like she planned it before she paid.  The only reason I can think of is she is already on the cusp of whatever penalty ebay enacts for buyers cancelling too many orders, could it be that?

Well anyway, at least I haven't shipped yet.  But 2 questions:
Should I just accept and agree to have the funds taken and given back, and if I do will I still get charged the $20 ebay penalty?
I still have the prompt to ship this item by 11:59 PM tomorrow; it doesn't recognize that the item is under dispute. What can I do about that?

Why cancel an order THIS way????

People get alerts on their phone when a transaction has occurred so who knows what happened. It's best not to make assumptions.

Since you haven't shipped I'd accept it.

If you had shipped, I'd dispute it, and eBays seller protection would cover it.

You only get charged the $20 fee if you challenge the dispute AND lose.

First thing that comes to my mind is the person's credit card was stolen and used by someone else. Purchase triggered an alert from the CC and the owner of the CC (not your buyer) immediately flagged it as fraud.

Or possibly the eBay account that made the purchase was hacked, owner got an alert on their CC and immediately flagged it as fraud.

As others said, the $20 fee is only assessed if you challenge the dispute and lose the dispute.

You can accept the dispute, although you may get a mark for late shipping since the order isn't cancelled.

I'd first try to cancel the transaction as buyer requested, but there's a strong possibility that won't work since there's an open payment dispute.

This happened to me where a dispute was filed before I shipped an order, but it's been a while and I don't remember what the system did and did not allow.

I agree with you.

Why not just ask to cancel the sale?

Why go through the trouble of a chargeback?

Geeeeez!  Ridiculous.

Yeah I don't want to do it in the wrong order, I may just have to get help from someone on EFB, if they answer quickly enough.

As for the hacked account theory -that occurred to me, but it doesn't make sense at all - what kind of hacker makes an offer to get a better deal on an item when they're spending someone else's money ..... and then also waits 2 days to pay, giving the real account holder that much time to log in and see that she was being prompted to pay for something she didn't want?

Some people do.  Depends on how they set up their preferences on their account.

But you are correct, this sounds very odd.

possibly a child or spouse used the credit card and the person was not aware of it.

Select the option "Accept and agree to have the dispute amount deducted from your funds."

If you challenge there is a good chance you would lose and have to pay the $20.  Just accept it, consider it a cancellation, block the buyer and move on is the easiest plan of action for you.

I would also think it was not a compromised account because of the offer, but maybe the spouse got the alert and it went wrong from there.

I have learned that some people are just not able to put two and two together with eBay transactions, when they got an alert, my guess is it did not register that it was for your transaction.  I kind of wish eBay transactions showed up as "eBay-sellername" on credit card alerts and statements.

I gotta get a new CC.  or a new bank. If I want to dispute a charge, I must call them and then argue with them about why it is wrong.    They call the company and listen to both sides. After that they decide if I get my money back. I have yet to win one.  And I no longer buy anything off Facebook.

Just my Two Cents...
Thank you for being here!

Ebay has given you two choices: Challenge or Accept.

Since you haven't shipped the item yet, select accept, which will refund the buyer and most likely will entirely close the dispute.

Put the buyer on your Blocked Bidder List to avoid this happening again because of a possible legitimate hacking, cc theft or unauthorized user.

Relist the item, dust off your hands, and move on.

@gurlcat

LOL.....@ -uh honey. When eBay charges appear in PayPal or a card statement, they are truly NOT descriptive.  When any shipping and tax is applied, the numbers don't match either.

That said, I would not be surprised if this said buyer asks you in a few days where their item is, and you get metric ding for the new INR thing.  Do let us know if you are able to cancel the sale at any point.

@gurlcat

I should have been a bit more specific:

Do let us know if you are able to cancel the sale at any point, and get your fees refunded

I am not familiar with the PAYMENT DISPUTE process as to what happens to a seller in this situation.  Thanks!

Well, one thing I forgot to say is I wrote to the buyer immediately after I saw this to ask what happened -I think this was about 8 pm central.  And she hasn't replied.  It's a buyer-only account with a VERY prolific buying history (almost freakishly prolific, see screenshot below, and that's just the sellers who left her feedback).  Incidentally she's in Puerto Rico, not that it raises any particular red flags.  Thing is, she also GIVES good feedback, even more reliably than sellers - she left 74 for sellers in the past month, whereas she received 55!    So I am just totally baffled about her in particular.   She buys THAT much on ebay and is THAT conscientious about her manners, but doesn't reply to a seller asking about a bizarre make offer > pay > chargeback from her account?  Geez, I hope this really isn't some scenario where the husband just found out about her running up the credit card and put her in the hospital or something.

Ebay For Business responded to my inquiry saying they don't handle any information about chargebacks, that I need to speak to a Managed Payments specialist.  Thing is, I'm quite clear on the right choice being "Accept/Agree".

What I'm more concerned about is how this is still a "Sold" item waiting to be shipped.

That is an unusual process.  Not one they can really do on Ebay.  Its all electronic.  CCC submits the claim, Ebay responds, seller sends in evidence and a decision eventually made.

With my CCC I can file a dispute online.  I do not have to call at all.
