Hey so I was almost broke and trying to make a few bucks and I came upon eBay, I had a couple tv screens that I wanted to sell so I put those TVs up and within a matter of time they sold, I shipped them and they get to the customer all broken, the box was ripped up and even a T-shirt was thrown inside the box( I do not know where the tshirt came from because it was not in there when I shipped it). The buyer decided to get a refund and I agreed with him because of how absurd the whole situation is so I gave him that refund. The moment I agreed to refund the buyer eBay charged my card $271 straight from my bank without warning so I called customer support and they told me within 48 hours I should get that money back because it takes a couple days. I waited a couple days and now instead of getting my money back eBay charged me another $80. I now only have 90 dollars in my bank account and that’s all I have for the next 2 weeks all because I wanted to make a little bit of money on the side. Why am I being punished for this? I thought the money that was on hold is specifically for refunds. No one is helping and that’s the reason why I am reaching out here because there isn’t even an email who I can contact. I am starving myself right now so I can feed my son because those 90 is all I got for the next 2 weeks. I am going to issue a refund from ups also because they broke the screens I paid good money for but that’s a separate issue. If anybody can help me get that money back I would appreciate it.

Ebay has had a rule for many years that pertains to New Seller and sellers that have been away from selling for 90+ days. The following is the policy that outlines why you money is likely on hold.

It doesnt show anything is on hold and that’s my concern because they charged me from my bank account AND they took the money that was on hold.

I thought the money was on hold in case there is a problem & the money needs to be refunded?

Your pic shows that your Visa card was charged for $271.33 and then there was a credit on your Visa for the same amount. So you are even on the 271.33 on your Visa. IDK what the $80 is you talk about, I didn't see anything in your pic that showed the $80.
As for when Ebay holds money. It is NOT for refunds. In fact when you refund a buyer it does NOT ever come from money you have on hold. It will come from your money that is NOT on hold, your bank account or your back up funding source.

Here’s the 80 dollars it says I underpaid for the shipping label, I know it’s not eBay it’s ups themselves making a stupid claim. I already shipped out 2 other of these screens and there was no issue or underpaid claim. Here’s what the image shows: they claimed I underpaid and since my account went in the negatives because of this(-89.75 to be exact) they charged me $80.27 from my bank account to make up the difference owed.

And another thing, you said “the refund does not ever come from funds that are on hold”. Take a look below and see what eBay has to say about transaction holds. Why are you guys so adamant about defending eBay?

Sorry for what happened to you, but as many new sellers quickly learn, eBay is not a good place to make quick money. Packing and shipping TV screens is something you need experience to do. Long time sellers, easy. New sellers, not so easy. Packing is a skill learnt over the years.
As for getting your money back from UPS, I can tell you right now what their response will be; "you did not pack it properly resulting in the damage. Refund request, denied".
eBay is easy once you learn to navigate the rules and learn the shipping and packing side. Instead of quitting eBay. Start small, learn how it works before you go to expensive and bigger stuff.

"Why are you guys so adamant about defending eBay?"
Stating the facts, which come from long time, experienced, sellers here, is not 'defending Ebay'.The link your provided is obviously for established sellers here, not newbies like yourself. Look up 'holds for new sellers'.

This thread will get closed soon. I hope you will start your own thread and post the email you got from Ebay, blacking out any personal information, that told you this. This is the very unusual thing for them to say, but I sure would like to read the email they sent you.
