What to do when I enter shipping correctly and then get charged more for the label?

Welp despite entering the correct measurements and weight of the box, I was charged $10 more for the label.  The buyer paid, so what to do?  Ebay says to cancel the auction and resend the invoice, but the first invoice was correct so what would that change?  Plus that's a hassle for the buyer that I'd like to avoid.

In these cases - the shipping estimates are wrong.  No matter how many of you say I did something wrong, I didn't.  I dealt with this by asking the buyers to PP me the difference but I'm sick of that.  I want a real solution.

This has happened four or five times in 40 auctions.  I know for a fact I filled out each shipping form correctly.  I have no idea why this happens on some orders and not others.

What to do when I enter shipping correctly and then get charged more for the label?

What shipping carrier and class of service are you using?

What are the weight and dimensions of the package, what are the amounts of the quote versus the label, and and what are the zip codes you are shipping from/to?

Shipping is a very broad topic. The more specific information you give us, the more likely it is that someone will recognize the issue and help you.

from what I can tell the shipping calculator is pretty good if you input the correct things

I use flat rate shipping of $5.50 but from what I can tell most of the sellers with a similar problem eventually do uncover a mistake along the way

there are too many variables and its easy to make an error

we would need to see an old listing that gave you a problem to uncover the error

the detectives here on the forum are very good at figuring out exactly the problem with calculated shipping

I also notices some incorrect info that pertains to refunds on shipping

when you make a refund of $2 for shipping you are only charged about $1.70

ebay kicks in the other 30 cents.  there are no fees at all for partial refunds with USPS

ebay does not charge for refunds like you have stated,it does not cost $1.87

ebay refunds are right to the exact penny nowadays

I'm not sure what you're asking, but here goes.

Something has happened to me a few times before, where I list a book but when it comes time to ship it, eBay forgets it's a book and tries to charge me the regular shipping rate. (rather than media mail) Whenever they, or I, have screwed this up, I don't purchase the overpriced shipping label. I go to the post office and pay to have them shipped via media mail. Then I upload the tracking number. If I had paid for the overpriced shipping label, I would have voided it.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your problem, but I hope it helps.

@whorunbartertown          if you don't list a book in the categories for books, ebay will not allow "media" mail labels.......

While you may have had the dim's and weight correct did you have the shipping set to calculated or flat rate?

As others noted we need a bit more information and some examples or some item numbers for some sold listings where you had a problem. Not implying you did anything wrong but difficult to look for possible causes without some detail. Are you purchasing your labels through eBay or through another discounted shipping service like Pirate Ship?

So if these are put up on auction with media mail, but then do not qualify to send that way, you have no options within eBay to send them that way.  Try using the shipping website pirateship to purchase media mail labels.  I have used them when this has happened and then add the tracking.  My guess is that eBay will only let you send ground advantage which is much more expensive.  It is odd, but sometimes magazines and comic books do NOT qualify for media in the eBay categories.  Hope that helps for the future!

Yes thank you I realized pretty soon that the refund fee depends on the refund amount, I just completely forgot to change that in my descriptions.  Thank you for reminding me I will change that!

It wasn't too difficult to figure out how to fill out the shipping estimate for invoices, and for most orders it was fine.  This thread is about an instance when the estimate was off despite the details remaining the same.  I know, it doesn't make sense!  This is what is so maddening.  It's actually more than one instance, it's been a few.  I thought it was in my head.  I have waited to post for a few weeks because I thought I was making mistakes, and so I became much more vigilant and made sure I entered everything properly.

One thing that seems weird and may be the source of this problem, is that when making the invoice, the  shipping service options page doesn't seem to carry those numbers over to the invoice.  On the invoice page, I click the little icon next to the shipping rates to change the shipping details.  I am taken to the estimate and service options page.  On this page I enter the correct details, then choose "ebay rates" and click USPS First Class, USPS Ground Advantage, and USPS Media Mail.  Then I hit "done" and get taken back to the main invoice screen - but the shipping info there is unchanged as if I'd never visited the other page.  I have to manually add additional shipping services as well as manually enter the amount from the estimate page.

I didn't notice this happening on previous auctions before last night.  I also was constantly getting data-losing error pages that still not been responded to, and that ticket was opened four weeks ago.  Last night I didn't get the error pages but this shipping nonsense happened.

2016 Macbook Pro OS 12.4, Firefox v117.0

The box is 26 pounds, 18x13x9

Traveling via USPS Ground Advantage from New Orleans, LA 70119-6343 to Valley Village, CA 91607-4105.  "Package" was selected.

The shipping estimate was $31.31

The label cost $41.41

Apologies for omitting these details and thank you all for being so quick to help a dummy like me.

Dan

So my guess then is that you have them listed to send media and then they only give you the option for ground advantage.  Seems to be what is happening

Another thing you may want to check in your account shipping preferences. About a year or so ago eBay unilaterally  setup a bunch of shipping rate table entries in my account settings that was causing me some major headaches. I had to go into my account settings and remove all the entries eBay had put in place. In your account settings, shipping preferences check the following.

They're all listed as comic / graphic novels so the media mail thing is not an issue.  I may try Pirateship just to see if it's better.

To be clear - those three shipping services (First Class, Ground Advantage, and Media Mail) are all available, their rates just end up changing when I go to purchase the label.  The prices are quoted for the invoice, I have to manually add / change the shipping rates on the actual invoice, then when the buyer pays the shipping has inexplicably gone up.

The comic book/graphic novels I looked at in your sold listings show you offered Priority mail as the service.  Unless you are combining sold listings, there is no need to send an invoice.  The shipping label should offer Priority mail when you go to print.  The shipping should be correct and isn't an estimate.    I'm not sure those items/category qualify for media mail, but if you offered Priority you need to ship Priority.
