What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

This started yesterday ... I have to go through multiple Sign in - Log in screens to gain access ... if I try to click the next step too fast it puts me in a repeat loop ... the pics below were 5 steps for just one log in session ... I've had more but the minimum has been 3 ... sometimes I get the little puzzle game or the type in the numbers game ...

Re: What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

A thread earlier in 2020 recommended pasting a shorter link into your browser bar.
This has worked flawless for me and there have been no reCAPTCHA puzzles to solve either.
I use my eBay ID and password, not signing in from some other website.

Re: What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

@mr_lincoln Hi, it is not in Firefox. The VPN is part of all the Norton Security services I have. I really like the firewall, virus definitions & internet security. I have the entire suite.

I always keep the VPN set to "off" when the computer starts. However, I did a comprehensive system update, so after restarting, the VPN started & I couldn't log into Ebay to save my life, ha!

After cursing in French for about 8 minutes, I realized it was on.

I want to say some positive things about Firefox. It is my favorite browser overall & is pretty secure, no holes on it. The security & privacy settings are nice too.

Chrome & IE have some bugs & holes in the browser. My friend who is a Salesforce engineer & coding programmer said, if you are going with google Chrome, download Duckduckgo. It is an extension & keeps Chrome buttoned up, secure & running clean. It cuts out pop ups & is pretty stealthy.

Sorry for the mini novel. : )

Btw, you can download Norton VPN for a trial basis I believe. You can use it on your cell or PC without having the other services they provide. It's a secure & trusted VPN.

Re: What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

There has been an increasing amount of reports here in the community and across social media platforms of people having their eBay accounts compromised recently.

We have also been dealing with an issue regarding retail arbitrage/triangle fraud that may be relevant because we believe many of the almost 50 accounts we have discovered involved in that fraud could be compromised/hacked dormant accounts.

There has also been an increasing amount of reports on the community and across social media of people having log in issues with captcha/authentication like you were seeing.  I'm guessing eBay may be tweaking some of the log in/security processes in response to increased attempted fraud activity.

Re: What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

@valueaddedresource Very interesting, I had no idea. No wonder the little puzzles are rampant now. Better to be safe then sorry.

If my Wi-Fi isn't streaming fluidly, it is sometimes hard to log in.

Ebay has 2 step authentication you can activate on your account. When you log in, Ebay will send a 1 time code to your cell, to let you log in. That will prevent fraudsters from getting into your account. A lot of people have no idea Ebay offers 2 step verification. It's nice to have on your account.

@euro-luxe  - 2 factor authentication is definitely a good way to go.  I wouldn't be surprised if eBay moves in the direction of requiring 2FA in response to what I suspect may be going on in regard to increased account hacking attempts.

In the particular case of the triangle fraud situation we are dealing with, many of the accounts we believe may be compromised are older accounts that we believe may have been dormant for some time before being taken over.

I can imagine over eBay's history, there may have been many accounts created for a one time purchase and then forgotten about.  It's also not hard to imagine that back when PayPal and eBay were so connected, many people used the same email addresses and maybe even the same passwords for both.  Even if they weren't the same password, if the email is hacked, that could give them easy access to both accounts.

Depending on how deep this problem runs, to really nip it in the bud, eBay may have to do something like put a hold on any accounts that haven't been logged into in over a certain amount of time and require additional ID verification on the next log in attempt.

Re: What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

@euro-luxe  - 2FA can be a two edged sword as well, as from some reports it appears that once the hackers gain control of the account, they change email address and phone number and then enable 2FA, which of course makes it even harder for the victim to regain control of the account, especially with eBay support being limited and/or backed up due to the current situation.

A Twitter account that covers many topics related to eBay has been retweeting reports of hacked/compromised accounts recently. Here are a couple of highlights from just this week:

"I noticed that my account was hacked into yesterday and the one added a 2nd verification with his/her phone number so that I don't get to receive the verification code sent for me to sign in to my account. I tried contacting ebay but to no avail"

"how can you contact customer service (uk) to report account hacking when the hacker has changed the email account so can’t sign in? Going round in circles."

"my eBay account has been hacked and two step verification turned on so I can’t access my account. Can you help? Can’t log into my account to get customer services number"

"my ebay account was hacked and someone purchased over $200 of merchandise and had it shipped to them. How do I go about disputing? Your phone lines are not open."

"Customer support has been terrible. My account was hacked and you provide no access to live customer support. I called your phone line but was informed all offices are closed - it's 2 pm on a weekday! You don't provide any email support. How am I supposed to fix this?!!?"

When I use Chrome in a normal browser window, I get a screen for my username, a screen for my password, and I am in.

I only get the puzzle piece when I am using an incognito browser window.

@mr_lincoln

You can't count the 'Oops, that's not a match' page.

Bahahahaaa............

The Password is pre-populated in the window so Oops DO count ...

I do not think eBay is pre-populating your password.

Wouldn't that  defeat the purpose of a password?

IMHO that must be something in your browser.

Yes, its a function on my computer yet somehow not accepted by eBay the first time through like it was previously ...

Maybe I`m not fully understanding the issue but to me it appears your browser has saved 2 different passwords and is entering the incorrect one.  Look at the difference in characters I have circled in orange.  If this is the problem it is a fairly easy fix.

Re: What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

@hillbillymedia   My ID was changed once and my password was changed once ... until this week there was not a problem with a simple log in using the two newer settings.  The browser I currently use was NEVER used with the older ID or the older Password.  I've cleared all forms and passwords at least once in the history of using this browser.

But to your point, every once in a while when I go to log in there is a list of two login dates to pick from ... I pick the most recent but it's possible the older one might have record of the older ID and Password ... I haven't really investigated the older one.

Re: What's up with the multiple Sign in - Login steps?

@mr_lincoln  I`ve had similar issues using firefox over the years for whatever reason. To fix it I type in my username manually and it prompts me to save and then type in manually my password and again it prompts me to save. Once you save both it overwrites the incorrect log ins. Worth a try I guess.
