What’s the point?

Why would a seller have Best Offer enabled on $17 item and then not accept an offer of $15? It’s not like I low balled the guy/gal? Just fyi if a seller has Best Offer enabled I will almost always make an offer 10 to 20 percent off asking and most of the time it is accepted. The seller is already letting me know is asking is not the real price. If offer not accepted I will usually still buy it.

Not only did he/she not accept my offer but when I went to buy it outright I find out he/she blocked me. I can see it if I low balled him/her. I’ve never dealt with this clown before.

Re: What’s the point?

Why would a seller have Best Offer enabled on $17 item and then not accept an offer of $15?

Because they did not realize they had Best Offer enabled?

Because they looked at the account and thought it represented a problem buyer? Or remember it from a previous transaction?

Something in the tone of the offer was misinterpreted or turned them off?

Because they looked at the account and saw they were a reseller and that offends them for some reason?

Because the offer prompted them to do price research and they realized it was under-priced?

Etc.

Re: What’s the point?

@luckythewinner ,

Many of their other items had Best Offer. Many similar priced. Never dealt with seller before. I’m not a deadbeat buyer. I don’t return hardly anything.  First time I have been blocked that I aware of.

Re: What’s the point?

Some sellers believe if you have "best offer" activated that Seller will get higher ranking from EBAY search engine.   They have no intention of accepting any offers.

Sorry this happened to you...your only offer seemed very fair.

@caldreamer ,

If that were the case why block me? They lost a sale.

Re: What’s the point?

I can't explain why a seller would do this but I can add it to my list of reasons why eBay is constantly losing buyers and has stagnant GMV.

I posted this comment a couple of days ago......

There are times when I think that eBay should never have introduced Best Offer for Fixed Price listings.

Your post simply reinforces my opinion!

I doubt the sellers who do this have any concept about the damage they are doing, damage which has a negative effect on eBay and all eBay sellers.

Something I haven't posted in years but is still valid today....

The best thing about eBay for sellers is the low bar to entry....the worst thing about eBay is the low bar to entry.

Long before ecommerce existed I saw B&M merchants act like this and the final results were always the same, a slow decline and eventual failure with no realization that they brought this upon themselves.

Re: What’s the point?

I will decline offers generally if I happen to already be the lowest price on something

Re: What’s the point?

@baantiques ,

This wasn’t an unsolicited offer. The seller enabled the option this item and a bunch their other similarly priced  items.

Re: What’s the point?

So did I.  I have it on by default because I don't have time to go through them individually.  I usually check when I get an offer to see where I stand in terms of price.  If I'm the cheapest, I decline the offer then remove BO from that listing.

Re: What’s the point?

'blocked me'...do you sell what this seller sells? Might be a reason why you got blocked. Just a thought.

Sellers don't sometimes like other sellers who sell same items.

I suggest you 'block' this person also'...ASAP.

Re: What’s the point?

I hate that as well.

It's a pet peeve of mine.

Your example is actually not that bad.

Maybe his "sweet spot" was $16?

Now if he rejects an offer of $16, then he's an idiot ... or ...

Like @luckythewinner suggested (and has suggested to me in the past), maybe the seller does not realize he has best offer enabled.

Re: What’s the point?

@inhawaii ,

I will not make an offer just $1.00 less than asking. $2.00 off of a $17 item is less than 10%.

No they didn't- they just 'postponed' a sale. Someone will buy it.

More than likely they don't know 'best offer' is on.

The price they have set could be the LOWEST price that they will take to make whatever profit they wanted to make.

A $17 item, may net them $5- and now you want to take almost 50% of that??

That may be how the seller is thinking.

Along with- you are now NOT a happy buyer having to pay 'full' price, so you may just give me headaches down the road...and for $5 profit- not even worth it.

So, blockity block you go.

Re: What’s the point?

Does OP have unpaid item strikes? Block might be unrelated to the Best Offer - assuming that was made through BO and not the messaging system.
