What is the buyer's point of their message?

On Thursday a buyer buys an item from me. Prior to the purchase they message me if I can expedite it and have it arrive to them by Monday. I never got a chance to answer them, and they just bought the item minutes after. They wrote this exact message in the buyer notes when they bought the item (they opted for the free shipping instead of the upgraded Priority Mail or Express Mail I offer in my listings).

I already shipped it out on Thursday, and I replied to them that I already shipped it out on 11/15, the day you purchased. The buyer then replies "I sent the message before I even purchased it and again in the comments of my purchase." I don't understand the point the buyer is trying to make by stating this fact I already knew. Does anyone know? I don't want to sound rude and ask the buyer what they mean by stating that fact.

Maybe the buyer thought you were going to upgrade the shipping to "expedited" by asking once again in the comments section?

That's why I do not offer free shipping. The buyer expected you to upgrade to priority to get the item faster. They don't care if it cost YOU more, they figure it was free shipping so it doesn't matter to them.

Oh okay. Yea you guys are probably right. I'll just have to reply to the buyer that I did already expedite it by sending it out same day vs 1 day handling. And pretty much expect a negative and/or a SNAD if it doesn't arrive to them by Monday.

Re: What is the buyer's point of their message?

The real problem is if you have one or even two day shipping there is no time to ask for additional funds or wait for an anwser. I just had one ask for signature required in order notes.

Re: What is the buyer's point of their message?

I'd reply:

Dear Buyer, Yes you did message me but then you turned around and chose the standard Free Shipping instead of either expedited option which were also available. Per eBay rules we are supposed to ship with the listed and selected method and you selected standard shipping. As it is First Class Parcel moves pretty fast, though it does not have a guaranteed delivery date in all likelihood there is a good chance it will be delivered Monday or Tuesday.

Right. I've gotten that before. Buyers who buy and pay for First Class shipping and in their buyer notes ask me to ship it Express overnight. Clearly this buyer should know that a high majority of sellers won't agree to this. There's no time to wait around for extra payment since most likely the buyer won't want to pay for it. So I just end up cancelling the sale (I don't care if I get dinged by cancelling because of the circumstance) because since I have free returns, it's more damaging if I send it First Class and the buyer files SNAD.

It's not always a bad thing, granted I don't like this tactic either but there are times when I will take the defect simply because I have the room for it... And if a negative comes my way resist the temptation to have CS take it down, perhaps with the latest avalanche of seller abuse these buyers are openly "testing" to see if there are any honest sellers left.

Re: What is the buyer's point of their message?

I think the buyer thought you didn't answer his message/s.  You thought by shipping it the same day and informing him of such was the answer.........he didn't agree........

Re: What is the buyer's point of their message?

You complied with the buyer'request, and did all that you were able to do at your end, by shipping same day.

Buyer failed to do all this buyer was able to do, by not paying for priority mail service.

Good luck selling

I would not have assumed that your definition of "expedited" would match his definition of "expedited".

I would have have asked for clarification before shipping.

It sounds like this to me too.  OP is talking about shipping speed (handling) and the buyer is talking about shipping method and probably wanted Priority.

Yea you are probably right. The buyer hasn't responded to my message yet. The problem about asking for clarification when the buyer seems urgent is that it can result to eating up time with the back/forths. And that's only if the buyer replies quickly (I've had buyers who seem really urgent and impatient but they respond very slowly).

I just checked tracking and luckily (I don't actually know if it's luckily for me or for the buyer), it shows that it's being delivered out to the buyer today... the day the buyer absolutely needs it by. So in hindsight, had I replied to the buyer before shipping it out... the item would arrive later than Monday and resulted in more trouble/drama from the buyer.

I'm not saying your suggestion is bad... but there is a risk either way. It's like you're stuck between a really impatient entitled rock and a hard place.

It's truly a shame if the abuse has driven buyers to act in such a manner, I am sorry that you are going through this.

I also had one of those. I had to void the original priority label in order to do one with s.c. And of course, the extra charge for s.c. (for a <$200 item) was on me.

Her reason for requesting s.c. is because items have been stolen from her porch lately!
