What are some items that have recently lost value?

Polaroid cameras really seem to have fizzled out.

A lot of collectibles don't move like they used to, I think mainly because more and more people of my generation want less and less "stuff".

What is something that used to be your bread and butter and is now pretty much worthless, within the last few years?

I agree, however realize on eBay some collectibles are being listed & grossly overpriced but are readily available elsewhere at a substantially lower cost , some potential buyers may simply have said bye bye to shopping on ebay

That is a very good question and I'm having a hard time in my store moving Coca Cola items even though most of it's authentic.

The stuff that I can't get enough of and sells right away are: Pyrex pink/ turq, samsonite travel cases 1960s, I sell older 35mm cameras really fast, and lately vtg pocket vases and head vases.

Plaid thermos have taken a dive also but that's ok because I collect them also.

Also I occasionally put out old walkie talkies and vtg boom boxes and they get snatched up frequently as well.

The collectible market is irrational. It is all about trends.

Just to mention an example.. Beatles memorabilia. There is officially licensed vintage clothing made in the 60s as in hats, shirts etc, some of which the Beatles themselves promoted which does not fetch anywhere near what modern stuff gets you even when in completely brand new condition, but worn out t-shirts from the 90s from certain music groups is somehow hot stuff fetching high dollar amounts even though you can find them all day long on ebay.

I have a feeling that this example in itself says the most about the collectible market.. when its fanbase grows older then a price drop will follow. Other examples of this would be cars.. most collectors are into somewhat modern high-performance cars while negletcing historical pieces that are a thousandfold more rare and significant.

Another example i can mention is pins.. back in the early 90s before the winter olympics there was this crazy pins hype in Norway.. people went nuts, official price lists and everything, several companies dedicated solely to the distribution of pins etc.. some pins fetching thousands of dollars yet today you can fairly easy pick up the same pins for less than $100 on a regular basis. The common ones you can get for around 20 cents a piece, back in the day the same pins would have been around $4 to $10, take inflation into account and it looks even worse. I bought a bunch of them on auction recently because why not.. it is not as if there is a danger of them going down more in value.

Some things seem to be in a bubble while true gems are being ignored. I think that the boom we see with certain modern collectibles will crash hard. Pokemon cards, sports cards, magic the gathering, funko pop plastic figurines etc.. there is just too much of it and they pump out new stuff every day and surely with the economic conditions it will grind to a halt, probably in a spectacular fashion where every speculator out there suddenly wants to unload.

I worked in a thrift store and we must have had thousands of collectable Avon bottles. As those that had them die off, the thrift stores get them cuz their kids don't want them. We just dumped them out and recycled the glass, didn't even try to sell them. In 2 1/2 years I only sold a couple bottles to a guy who actually liked the aftershave, not for the collectability. And we had an old price guide where the bottles were supposedly worth a lot!

Also, beanie babies were just given to babies and small ones, they really loved them. We could never sell them.

Coins and stamps have decreased in popularity. I still manage to sell stamps for reasonable amounts of money by taking apart cheaply purchased collections and building more interesting combinations to resell on eBay.

Today's coin collector wants packaging with their coins, not just coins in flips that were once in circulation. I've taken to investing in Mint product to try and revive my coin sales.

Oh my gosh, I forgot collector's plates! When I was a kid our neighbor had her whole house decorated with them, it was like a museum. She had Gone With the Wind, State capitols, The Sound of Music...

That's all old stuff though, I'm not sure of recent things that have lost steam. We used to sell Polaroids as quick as we got them, sorry to hear that might be passe now...

We have been selling walkmans quickly and hand held recorders.  Cassette tapes are popular again.  8 tracks, not so much.  Vintage tupperware was hot thru covid - now, not so much again.

I don't find that irrational at all. Concert tee shirts from the 1990s are not "collectibles" in the same sense as carnival glass or Hummel figurines.

They are a wardrobe. A fashion statement. A lifestyle.

No Millennial in a bar or GenX at a silicon valley startup is going to get a thumbs up from his colleagues for wearing a vintage officially licensed Beatles hat or shirt.

But they will if they wear a shirt from a band they grew up with and can relate to like Nirvana or the Ramones.

The only Beatles stuff they have is the stuff they are selling from their late parents' estates.

It's quite capricious indeed, many items are worthless but just as many are worth a near fortune and it's hard to say which is which until trial and error (mostly error) but finding that gem can be well worth it.

Vintage item values go up and down. Trends.

The price you get for it today will probably change in 6 months to a year. Could be more or could be less.

Trending prices sometimes fall when people undersell their items. Sellers list their item at under value price and then other sellers follow suit with the cheaper price. Not good at all.

Beanie Babies, Avon, glassware and other older common MASS produced items are really something sellers should avoid unless there is a trend towards rebounding price.

There have been occasions when I was going to list something, only to find it had a low value and not worth listing. Then a year later I see it SELLING on ebay with a much larger price.
