I've noticed that people selling VHS tapes that are filled with content, such as movies etc., also include 'sold as blanks'. Is there a reason for that? I have a feeling I know why but I want to make sure.

That wasn't my question. I asked why they put SOLD AS BLANKS in the item description when they are really selling movies, etc.
Because they can't sell fakes.
They can sell the tape, but not the movie recorded on it.

Having once shown dogs and have seen many people recording them I'm going to have to ask Westminster if it's okay to tape their shows....both live and also on TV.
That is a very good idea.

I'll let you know what I find out.
It wouldn't surprise me if they tell you that they can't find any recordings of their 1997 Dog Show, and can they please buy yours.
Technically, yes, you can't go selling your own recordings of the dog show as you do not own the rights to the show, though I seriously doubt that anyone in general is going to come after you for selling grainy old recordings of their material. Given that the VHS format is the worst, most obsolete form of video out there, I don't think there's any demand for programming on it anyway (with the singular exception of niche collectible titles that were never reissued in later formats such as DVD). If your main motivation is just to sell a pile of old but usable home recording video cassettes, then I would make reasonably sure that there's no porn on them, and then list them without any reference to their possible current contents at all.

@7606dennisI wrote to the Westminster Kennel club and asked if I could sell the video I made of the show and they said .... " Unfortunately, it is not advisable to record and sell tapings of the WKC Dog Show at any time. You may keep them for your own personal use, but seeing as the WKC records and sells DVD’s of the show every year, it would be illegal for you to sell any recordings you may have made." Sooooooo, the answer is no, so I won't.
Yes, I thought that may be an issue.

@7606dennisWell, it sure surprised me. Soooo do I just sell them as blank tapes like everyone else or would that be risking it?
I would wipe them first.

@7606dennis Wish I could. I'm letting them go because my tape deck isn't working. I guess I'll just toss them. 😞 I wonder if the one who was/is selling one on here is going to get in trouble.

Frankly, I probably wouldn't go to the trouble and just trash them. Of course, what do I know, I've got a bunch of 5 1/4 inch floppy disks laying in a drawer.

@7606dennis Actually it kinda makes me angry ... I mean, it's MY TV, and MY video of the show and MY work editing out the commercials, etc., so why can't I do what I want with it. Now if I had bought the video from them then it's their work and I can see my not making any money on it.

But it is that organizations performance. Just like if you attend a sporting event, theatrical production or a concert, the copyright laws apply.
