USPS First Class Postage Rate

Did I miss some sort of announcement about the postal rates going up for First Class Mail......or did email just change what they offer as a rate?

USPS First Class Postage Rate

I detect a little sarcasm there, but I will still go ahead and respond....!  The level for the 1099 was at $20,000; and since my annual sales were generally around $9,000, I didn't have to worry about it.  Over my twenty years of selling within eBay, I have had two different accountants, and both agreed that it wouldn't be required.  Thank goodness because eBay didn't furnish 1099s for anything under $20k (and that goes back to when eBay didn't steal FVFs for shipping costs and state sales taxes...).  And of course, trying to determine my costs (for who knows how many of my vinyl products were purchased at  what price at local garage/estate sales).

MY QUITTING:  I just turned 80....and I supposedly retired (from IBM) back in April 2003.  This was 'fun' at that time; and the minor amount of income was nice...not needed...but still nice.  Over the past couple of years this has become work (with obviously to bennies...) with such things as (a) Item Specifics that had to be mostly added to each of my then 3,000+ listings; (b) then there was/is the software complaints about "Remove Contact Info.....blah, blah".....for which they furnish any sort of tool to locate whatever in the heck they SUDDENLY didn't like within my 5,000+ listings....and some of those listings go back to 2013/2015/etc.; (c) as of August 31st we now have this new Listing 'Tool' (and NO I don't want to hear from anyone that "this is the same listing tool that eBay released over a year ago, but with improvements".  Maybe if that individual is loading an item from scratch, it works fine......but if one uses the "Sell Similar"  or "Template" functions, the 'tool' is pitiful....the software was poorly designed!; and (d) now we have this new 1099 threshold of only $600.

Working with my accountant this coming November, I/we will develop a 'game plan' on what and how needs to be gathered to comply with this 2022 tax requirement.  The first 'mystery' will be to see what eBay posts as profits/purchases on their 1099 format.....does it falsely claim that the Shipping Cost paid by the Buyer is a profit for the Seller; and/or do they falsely claim that the Sales Tax paid by Buyer is a profit for the Seller.  And of course, there will be  the sudden challenge to try and figure out what my costs (i.e. vendor built heavy cardboard shipping mailers; what I paid for the items 10-20 years ago; etc.)

So after the first of the year I will closely watch my POTENTIAL 2023 sales amount......when it approaches (probably in February) the new $600 threshold, I will immediately close my store....and worry about my huge currently listed and unlisted vinyl inventory,  some other time.

I am astonished that your accountants didn't realize that your profit from eBay sales was subject to income tax, even before the 1099-K was invented.

I love how the eBay cheerleaders come on here and berate people for not paying taxes.  What good citizens they are.  Simple, with all the extra **bleep** involved sorting out the 1099 ( what if eBay sends one with a big error on it? Who do you call? Who will fix it? Now you have to pony up for a lawyer) is an extra hassle that contributes to the amount of work eBay has become.  The profit isn't there anymore, and if you can't make money it's time to close the store.

It's not a mystery as to what a 1099k includes, and I'm surprised your accountant isn't familiar with those either in order to give you help with this.   They aren't intended to report profits, so you do need to keep track of all your expenses throughout the year.  Everything but sales taxes they collect are included.  You may owe nothing, but they still were supposed to be reported.  I'm shocked when I hear other sellers haven't done this all along.

The $20k threshold was only for receiving the 1099k---not for reporting on your taxes.  What job gives people a pass on the first $20k they receive?

MISUNDERSTOOD!  I pay taxes.....mucho taxes!  The minor amount of ACTUAL MONEY that I received from my eBay (and previously GEMM and AMAZON) were minor.  If I had ever known that those annual amounts of actual profits were subject to taxes (and ALL THE WORK OF TRYING TO FIGURE OUT MY COSTS), I would never ever started selling my 100,000+ 45rpms (still have over 10,000 to go...and probably now never will be); 7,500+ (LPs not listed yet....and now never will be); and my MONSTROUS Elvis Presley vinyl collection (not listed yet, and never will be).

SO PEOPLE:  I am not evading taxes on these minor amounts of ACTUAL SELLS (and certainly not on the two stupid adders that I expect eBay to include within their upcoming 1099s), it was discussed....and legally determined that I shouldn't have to do it.  So if YOU are still convinced that I am evading taxes, go ahead and contact the IRS....but do include you name within the complaint....because yes, I do have a lawyer!!!

Enough with this nonsense.....I got initially requested information and I have subsequently bulk updated all of my 5,400+ listings to a new US postal rate.  (I'll peek at the Canadian and overseas rates to see if I need to bulk update them....but sales to those locations nearly disappear due to previous huge postal increase!)

Have a great life; and enjoy your eBay experience......I did many years ago.  Jim

I stated "reported".  I even said you might not owe anything on your sales, but until the deductions are entered I'm not sure how you know.   I had a friend audited for not reporting her ebay sales and that happened even before they sent 1099ks at the $20k threshold.

I didn't say you weren't paying any taxes.
