I've done it a many times.
A customer buys 2 items. Checks out separately. Does not take advantage of combined shipping. I pack them together. I give a partial refund on the second item for "combined shipping refund".
Then i'll upload the tracking number for the first item to the second item so that both orders show as "shipped" under the same tracking number.
Tonight it's not letting me. I'll keep trying throughout the day but i'm worried that the second order still shows at "not shipped". Any suggestions?

I just discovered it will let me upload a DIFFERENT tracking number but not the same tracking number. This is something new.

I did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Put both items in 1 package, same tracking # on both items, and refunded his shipping for the second one. He opened a case and said he only got 1 item. I had to refund him and lost the second item. I asked ebay how I can combine items in the future and they said there's a new option for doing that. It was seller hub, orders, awaiting shipment.... but not sure where to go after that because I haven't had the need since. I won't combine like I used to do.

I heard of this being a problem for others but it must be random because I was able to enter a tracking number yesterday for the same situation you have.

Haven't had too many of the combined thingys, especially not lately.............but what I've done is go to bulk shipping and there they ask if you want to combine and if so, you can print the label and both items get the same tracking number. If there is something new in the last month or so..............that process may not work the same.

I am on the opposite end of this issue. When a customer buys 2 of my items in very quick sequence and ebay then automatically combines the shipping. I sell mostly glass my ability to successfully combine glass items is limited. Yes I can still ship separately just would be easier if ebay did not combine.

When they auto combine, do they refund the buyer his second shipping charge?

I'll be watching to see how this plays out as I get requests for combined shipping. But if I can't upload the tracking number I won't do it.

Double check and make sure the buyer’s ebay names are EXACTLY THE SAME in both purchases. There’s been times that this happened to me too, then I realize the screen names look really similar but weren’t exactly the same. This happens often when the buyer purchases as guest both times. Other times the buyer just has two accounts with a very similar screen name.
Ebay won’t let you reuse the same tracking for two different accounts, regardless if the shipping address is the same.

I believe what you are referring to is when the buyer adds both items to their ebay cart and pays for both items at the same time resulting in one transaction.

So apparently what i've been doing for years ... you can't do that anymore. It will no longer let you use the same tracking number for more than one order.
"Hey James, thanks for reaching out. We appreciate you taking the time to update the shipping on those orders. Unfortunately, there is no way to add the same tracking number to two different orders if the buyer's user ID's are different on each order. The best thing to do is just send the customer a message letting them know both items will be coming in the same shipment. Situations like this should be covered by the thresholds we have on your seller performance so it won't affect your account if you are missing the tracking for one order. If this does cause any changes on your seller performance that you'd like us to review just let us know! ~Veronica"
