Thrift store pricing increases again?

Seems like the thrift stores are getting a little greedy.  Price increases averaging 15% per year for the last 3 years, especially on general clothing and speciality or NWT items.

A used pullover sweatshirt or pair of used sweatpants here was 3.95 three years ago.  Now, they're all asking 5.95-6.95.  Run of the mill, no name brands.

Decor items.. with the Ross "compare at 9.99 stickers",  yours for a great bargin of 4.99.   I guess here, half price of what item was new - is their best deal to offer.  Apparently, items fallen out of trend have no impact on their pricing considerations.  Lots of owl and elephant figurines of all shapes and sizes getting donated now cause they're over - but still marked at on trend prices.

Don't they know, before these new items were donated - they were likely offered at half price or better in the retail store before they did their shelf pull and donated them???

Anyone else notice yet another price jump in the last month or so?  The winter clothes just coming out now have about a 30% jump in last years pricing:(

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

And that is why imo separate needs from wants.  The needs should be for those who truely need it - where doumentation supports it.  What is left then can be up for grabs.

I see it most often at Vinnies (SVdP) that shoppers will have some sort of account with the store and at a guess from some social services.

My GF got occasional 'coupons' from her church when the end of the month came too soon for her grocery needs. She was a single mother, hiding from an abusive husband.

While some items, jewelry/DVDs/fine china, are not available for the accounts, I can also see that some of these account holders are very likely hoarders or have some other mental illness.

Others are mothers picking up children's clothing for the new school year and the like. But I know from friends in the 'poverty business' that a lot of the money made from thrift stores goes into the charity's programs.

For example, SVdP supplies new snowsuits to children although they also sell used donated ones. Not only does this mean the kids don't stand out, but the suits actually fit the child. Because what is needed may not be in the store when it is needed.

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

yeah - might as well buy new. Used t shirts with stains $4 - new for $5  - I don't know what it is - i would be lucky to give them away - some stuff may be better if you have 4 hrs to look and dig. some thrift stores are better though i guess. probably be hard going thru all the stuff people leave-may be the best they know how to do. I hope they use the profit to help people in need and that is ok to pay a little more. I'm just rambling now but i can see it in different ways. Glad they got a job.

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

I'd fire most of these thrift store managers and pricers if I ran them.

Some one mentioned above that the Idaho(?) Good Will essentially runs the job retraining programs.

Here it's Value Village, with a little money going to Juvenile Diabetes.

The stores is almost the excuse for the training programs.

And training can be the simple stuff like knowing when your shift is, getting on the right bus, and showing up on time.

Or it can be complicated stuff like running a cash register. We had a friend who would occasionally help us in our shop (not a thrift) who kept a record of all the sales he handled in  notebook because the register baffled him. He was also a published non-fiction writer with a Master's degree in History.

He could balance the cash. It was the machine he couldn't work out.

Pricing falls somewhere in between.

Someone mentioned the possiblility that the workers may price Old Navy and George products higher than Eileen Fisher or Jill Sander because they are familiar with them -- and not familiar with the differences in fabric and workmanship.

Then if the charity is promoting those workers into management, instead of going outside, the result may be a good manager with a limited knowledge of the wider market. It's really hard to know what you don't know.

I would rather the thrift make money so they can help the poor then the ebay resellers.

I certainly did not donate with the intent so sellers here can run their business, and I am certain others did not as well.

You do realize, some eBay re-sellers are the "Poor".   In fact,  if they were not re-sellers based on their other "limited and fixed" income they would qualify for food stamps, cash assistance, utility aid, etc.   Some people are poor because they "choose" not to work or work hard enough to support themselves.

And...........

The proceeds the Thrift stores received from resellers puts cash in their hands .............this cash helps the these stores help those who are "unable" to support themselves; its a WIN WIN situation!

Then they would have a voucher to show they qualify.

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

No-one is asking you to donate.

So if you don't think resellers should be able to buy items at TS that they can then resell for more, where do you suggest they DO get their items?

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

I don't know why you are complaining... sounds like you have a great "shopping" head on your shoulders and know how to find great deals!! If you are used to shopping "out of season" and getting items for .49 or .79 that you flip for hundreds of dollars when the season is right, then you are WAY ahead of the game! So, if stores raise their prices "in season", you are STILL going to be able to shop "out-of-season" for dimes on the dollar, even if you have to pay .79 to 1.39 for items that you can later flip for much more!! I used to be a "Flipper" too!! I loved it so much, that I BOUGHT the store when it went up for sale in my area!! Now, I own and run a Consignment Shop........ and people STILL do what you are doing.. they go buy it elsewhere for .79 and bring it to me to sell for $8 (which YES, that price is higher than it was last year!!) 🙂 When it sells for $8, I split that commission with my consignor!! They bring me MANY of these items, and they profit 150% of their original purchase price, and I have NO REASON to appologize for my higher prices at all! And most of my customers don't complain, either. Because they can come to me and buy an UNDER ARMOUR Hoodie for $15 instead of $50 Retail!! I was a "Flipper", as I said, and I don't leave a lot of room for those coming in looking to BUY at prices they can flip again for a profit! I make my prices affordable for those truly wanting NICE things at a good price!! Anything left over gets donated to very good causes, I make sure of that... I don't want anything going to landfill. And if it is truly "High End" so that my customers still just cannot afford, well then, I make deals with my consignors, and I sell it for them here on eBay!! Not everyone can just "buy the Business" like I did, I realize! But, even if I was still just "Flipping", I would not complain... even at my store... when things totally go "Out of Season".... I offer the items at $1.50 each, or 10 for $10= $1.00 per item! Any reseller can take that and work with it!!! Seems to me like you are doing fine, Gal, even though us Businesses keep raising our prices... where there is a will there is a way.....  and if you time it just right, you will still get STEALS off of us!!!! ❤️ --Jen

Put them on a no call list then. I've never had Goodwill call me. That sounds like a scam call to me.

Not from me.  If I donate to a place I want to know that the items and or money is going to whom it is supposed to help.

Remember Wounded Warriers and the public learning that they were using donations so those running it could go to expensive locations and eat very well.  Then guess what happened, donations dried up, until they got back on track.

Same with Goodwill.  I have donated a lot in the past and have a lot more to donate.  But I will not do so until they get their act together as well.

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

There is a Goodwill down the street from me. One of the things my mom loved was thrift store shopping. I took care of he here in her last years and 3-5 days a week she'd have her goodwill day. I was stunned by the prices. I could buy new items at TJ Maxx for less than what the Goodwill price tag was. Every once in a while there would be a great deal. Shoot, one day with her I spotted a 1920's American Oak dresser for only $20 and got to use her senior discount. That being said, the vast majority of their things are ridiculously priced. And still, the store is jam packed. On Sunday I went to run an errand and was coming back just at their opening time. There was a line of 20 + waiting for it to open.

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

I have no problem with stores run by charities charging whatever they want for their items. I do have a problem with a cashier changing clearly marked or posted prices at checkout. That has happened to me three times at a SA thrift store.  I presume the price would have been raised no matter who was purchasing it. It was wrong, in any case. I don't think all SA stores or thrift stores do this. This was a particular employee. I have returned to the store but did stay away for a solid year.

Re: Thrift store pricing increases again?

Very generous of you. But I wouldn't worry if the furniture is sold to someone in real need of it or sold to someone else and the money from that sale used to help people in need. I think you could feel good about giving either way.
